I didn’t move.

“You can answer.”

I shake my head. “No, it’s fine.”

His eyes narrow on me.

Blaine had called three more times since we left and I was afraid. I didn’t want Greyson to find out and end up doing anything he would regret.

We stare at each other, and just as he opens his mouth to speak, I hear my brother’s voice. I quickly step away, putting a reasonable amount of distance between us. Greyson clears his throat as Adam joins the group.

He shakes Rex’s hand, then Greyson’s before his eyes land on mine. He freezes, his gaze landing on my lip.

Anxiously I pull it between my teeth and turn my face away.

“Tilana.” His voice is serious. I hated when he went into authority mode. And used my government name.

I face him, holding my chin high. His hands were practically shaking, but Bekka steps up, sliding one of her hands into his.

“Maybe you two should talk in private,” she whispers.

He nods and she kisses his cheek before he starts towards the side of the house.

I let out a deep breath as he turns to walk away.

Greyson lifts his hands. You good?

His concern made my chest squeeze. I’m good.

Chapter 36

Greyson

I watch Adam and Tilly from across the yard. I knew her, but I also knew my best friend. Adam could be a hot head when it came to the people he cared about. He almost lost his badge when shit went down with Bekka a few years back. I could tell by his body language she told him everything and she swipes at her face a few times before he hugs her.

I hated what happened. I hated I couldn’t stop it.

You could have if you hadn’t waited seven years.

“I can see the wheels turning.” My brother steps up next to me. “And it’s not your fault.”

“If I would have been here…”

“Grey, it’s a shitty situation. Neither you nor her are to blame,” he cut in.

I keep my gaze on her, taking a drink of the beer I have in my hand.

They finally part and Adam disappears inside the house. I’m sure to get control and Tilly wanders back to the fire where the girls sit. I blow out a breath before I start towards the house. I’ve needed to have this conversation with my best friend for a long time and now was as good as ever to get it over with.

I walk into the kitchen. Adam had his hands planted against the counter. His head hanging low.

“I want to kill him, Grey.” His voice was dark.

“You and me both.” I walk over next to him, taking a seat on one of the barstools.

I let the silence linger a moment before I speak. “I need to tell you something. I know you’re pissed right now, but it needs to be said and I’m going to ask you to not to lose your shit until I explain.”

“Explain what?” He lifts his head.
