She buries her face in my chest, and I close my eyes.

Trust me. I didn’t even trust myself at the moment.

Chapter 44

Greyson

I push open the door to the squad room. It was busy. The room buzzing as people shuffled about Timber Creek business. The first person I see is Jace, who’s brows furrow when he strides towards me.

“What are you doing here?”

“I was informed they wanted to speak to me. From what I gather they know I was at Blaine’s condo. I need to set the record straight on what happened.” I glance around. “Is East here?”

“He’s off today. But Adam is.” He places his hand on my shoulder and guides me off to a side hallway.

“Greyson, I’d advise you to answer a basic yes or no. Don’t give them any ammunition,” he says quietly.

“It’s better if I come clean than if they find out on their own right?”

“Yes, but tread carefully. I’ve done this a hundred times. To be honest, you’d be the first person I would look at. I asked Adam’s friend; he said you were seen on surveillance cameras.”

I nod, blowing out a breath.

“Just keep your cool and answer truthfully.” He shrugs. “We’ll try to stay in the loop. Let you know when they’ve cleared you.”

We walk back into the squad room. Adam wanders out of Cap’s office just as we step around the corner. His expression isn’t comforting when he meets me halfway.

“I was just about to call you.” He runs a hand over his jaw. “They want to question you.”

“That’s why I’m here.”

Adam tilts his chin at someone across the room. Two men who didn’t look like they belong in our small town.

I clench and unclench my fists as I follow Adam into an interview room. One man seems riddled with tension while the other is relaxed.

“Greyson Roy.” The relaxed one sticks out his hand. “Detective Asher. I’m a big fan.”

Ok not what I was expecting.

“Thanks.” I shake it before facing the other man.

“I’m Detective Caster. You can have a seat,” he states.

I sit down in the cold metal chair and roll my shoulders back.

“I’m sure you’re aware of the news of Mr. McKnight?”

“Yes sir.”

“How did you two know each other?” He asks.

“Mutual friends,” I answer.

“Ms. Harper?”

“Yes.”

I grit my teeth at the mention of her name. They didn’t need to bring her into this. She was just as much of a victim as he was.
