He shoots me a look. “When I realized my best friend was about to fuck my sister? No. We skipped past that part.”

“I appreciate that.” I blow out a breath.

“That’s not all.” We’re on the main road now, running about seventy. “It’s what was caught when we were all at Easton’s.”

His tone makes me tense. “Someone came into the house. Deactivated the alarm, walked straight over to the drawer, and took the gun.”

“The fuck?”

“Grey….” He jerks the wheel, passing a minivan. “It was a woman.”

My head spins. My heart pounds.

“A woman?”

“Yeah. The same woman that was seen at his condo after you left.” He swallows. “She left lipstick on his collar. DNA should be back any minute.”

“None of this makes sense?” I face the window. “What woman would want Blaine dead? And why would they use Tilly’s gun to do it?”

“Mistress maybe?” Adam shrugs. “I don’t know I just feel like there’s something we’re missing.”

A shrill alert sounds on my phone, and I dig it out of my pocket. My entire body goes rigid when I see the alert.

Fire.

The alerts to Tilly’s security system are connected to my phone. It only alerts on an emergency. All I can do is angle the phone his way before I’m banging my fist on the dash.

“Hold on, Grey.” Adam presses on the gas. “Call Easton.”

Chapter 55

Tilly

I spent as long as I could examining every avenue possible before Adam sent me home. I took a hot bath, lit a few calming candles downstairs and drifted to sleep on the couch. I woke up in the early hours of the morning and climbed upstairs and passed out again.

I was in a deep sleep, but something was gnawing at me to wake up. I blink open my eyes, trying to let them adjust to the dark room. I roll over, glancing at the foot of my bed. My heart slams against my chest as I lurch up, taking in the dark silhouette standing at the edge. My hands move quick to flip on my lamp, hoping it’s just sleep deprivation and I was hallucinating. Blaine was gone. He couldn’t hurt me anymore.

I sigh in relief and my hand lands on my chest.

I snatch up my hearing aids and plug them in. “Jesus Lucy. You scared the crap out of me. Is everything ok?”

She doesn’t move at first. She just stares at me with a blank expression on her face.

“Lucy? Is something wrong at the center?” I ask and fling off the comforter.

I notice a small sliver of light shining through the curtains, so I know it’s morning. She should be at the office by now.

When I stand to my feet, I notice something in her hand. The lamp light reflects of the silver blade she has resting at her side. The relief I felt dissolves and fear takes its place. Swallowing me whole.

“Lucy?”

“Everything isn’t okay, Tilly.” Her voice is quiet, but the look in her eyes is off.

“What do you mean?” I take a small step, keeping my voice calm.

“After all I’ve done for you.” She lets out an erratic laugh.

She’s barefoot, wearing dark pants, and a dark sweatshirt. Her hair is matted, and her mascara is smeared.
