I thought he was overbearing before, now all he’s done is hover and panic over every move I make. I’m two seconds away from sending him on a pointless errand so I can breathe.

“I’m fine Greyson.” I roll my eyes.

The pain pills they gave me were doing their job, so it actually wasn’t too bad.

“I knew something was off this morning.” Cami slips her hand into Jace’s. “You can ask him. I was up at five. Couldn’t sleep.”

Jace leans over and kisses her head. “She’s telling the truth. I was up with her.”

I glance around the room. Whitley sits at the bar, letting June paint her nails a hideous shade of yellow.

Elle has been crying ever since they got here, and poor Easton has been doing everything he can to soothe her.

“No one could have known.” Jace says.

“Why didn’t this come up in her background check?” I ask.

“She wasn’t convicted. The person ended up dropping the charges if she agreed to psychiatric help.” Jace lifts a shoulder. “Plus, she was a minor. It’s something no one saw, Tilly.”

I wasn't sure what was more skin crawling. The cameras, the fact I woke up to her hovering over my sleeping body, or the shrine they found in her house. The one with pictures of me plastered all over the walls.

“We didn’t get the hit until right before we got the call about the fire.” Adam’s arm tightens around Bekka’s waist. She’s been sitting on his lap at the other end of the couch.

“She seemed unstable. I wish I would have known she needed help.” I admit. “I agree with whoever it was before. She needed professional help.”

Then Blaine would be alive. Still my ex-fiancé, but alive. Greyson wouldn’t have a murder charge tied to him with a million phone calls from news outlets already, and my house wouldn’t be burnt to the ground.

Sadness forms in my chest, but I let out a small smile when I see Nelson in his cage on my dad’s dining room table. The firefighters were able to save him before the flames got to him.

“I was…. blindsided.” I look at Greyson. “I’m sorry you had to get dragged into this.”

Greyson intertwines our fingers. “I wasn’t dragged into anything. You’re my person, Rosie.”

He brings our clasped hands to his thigh. “Speaking of blindsided, I guess I’ll let y’all know before the media does.” Greyson pauses. “I’m retiring.”

My father’s eyebrows raise. “That’s a big decision. Where do you plan to be next?”

He looks at me, so much love staring right back at me. “Wherever she is.”

Adam lets out a sarcastic “awe” and Bekka elbows him in the ribs.

“While we’re all sharing life altering news…” Elle sniffs. “I’m pregnant.”

I shriek. Immediately gripping my side when a sharp pain hits me.

“Damn it, Tilly,” Greyson barks.

Cami screams and Bekka tumbles off the back of the couch. Laughter bubbles from every corner of the room and I had no idea how bad I needed it until this moment.

Someone knocks on the door, and my father stands to answer. Jordan Carmichael strides into the living room. Still in a ridiculously expensive suit and not a hair out of place.

“Look who stopped by,” my father calls out.

Jordan waves a hand. “I was heading to the airport. Just wanted to shake your hand, Greyson.”

Greyson stands, meeting him in the dining room. “Thanks man. I appreciate you coming all the way out here “

“Not a problem. It’s my job.” He moves his eyes to Jace. “It wasn’t half bad getting to drink a few with my brother. It’s been a while.”
