Page 53 of Her Three Hitmen

Xavier and Antonio burst into the room, slamming the doors open so suddenly that I let out a startled shriek and jump away from the almost-kiss Lucas and I were leaning in to share.

"Christ, you scared the hell out of me!" I say, laughing nervously.

Neither of them respond, stomping forward with red-hot anger visible in their eyes. My heart races as I try to gather my thoughts, wondering what happened and why they're furious with me.

I flinch away as Xavier and Antonio reach out toward me, but they grab Lucas instead and pin him to the floor, their expressions twisted in rage. They didn't even spare me a second glance as if I'm not even there.

"What the hell are you doing? Let him go!" I exclaim, scrambling to my feet in complete and utter shock.

Xavier and Antonio ignore my words, their muscles bulging as they use all their strength to keep Lucas down. I scream as Antonio slams his fist straight into his nose, blood spurting out from the impact.

"Hey!" I exclaim, trying to pull them off Lucas. "Have you lost your minds?!"

My words are cut off by Xavier's livid roar. "IS IT TRUE?"

I freeze, my mind racing as I try to figure out what Xavier is talking about. True? What's true? My eyes flicker to Lucas, who's still struggling beneath them, blood staining his face and clothes.

I feel a knot in my stomach, the fear that has been building inside me finally exploding into a million fragments. Xavier's usually calm and collected demeanor is gone, replaced by an intense fury I've never seen before.

"Answer me!" Xavier bellows, his grip tightening on Lucas's shirt.

Lucas gasps for breath, trying to push back against the two men restraining him. "What are you talking about?" he gasps out, blood dribbling down his chin.

Antonio leans in closer to Lucas, his voice a low growl. "Don't lie to us, pretty boy. Did you tell her?"

Lucas winces in pain as Xavier tightens his grip on him. "Tell me what?" I ask, feeling the tears start to gather in my eyes.

Xavier turns his gaze to me, his eyes hard and unforgiving. "He's a lying sack of shit. He's an undercover fucking agent," he turns to stare at him again, "isn't that right, Lucas?"

I can't believe what I'm hearing, can't comprehend the words Xavier just spoke. A spy? No, it can't be possible. My head spins and I lean against the nearest wall, gasping for breath. This is too much to take in, too much to cope with.

It can't be true… Can it?

I look up at them with wide eyes, but they give me no sign of a lie. They stare intently back at me and I see anger in their eyes - Not anger at me, but anger at the situation itself, which only adds to my confusion.

"No," I say firmly, shaking my head. "Lucas isn't... he wouldn't. He's not!"

The three of them share a look and Antonio snorts under his breath. I want to scream, to run out the door, to do anything that could keep this from happening.

Lucas glances at me with sad eyes, raising his hand to reach for mine. "Mia…wait…" he says weakly with blood stained lips.

Antonio slams his foot down on Lucas's arm, inciting shouts of pain from both of us. "Don't touch her," he growls. "You don't fucking touch her."

This can't be happening…

My knees buckle under me and I sink to the floor, my strength leaving my body as I work desperately to process what's happening.

As I stare at Lucas, pale faced and bruised, I can feel myself crumbling from the inside out. My heart sinks into my stomach as I realize that everything we've gone through, everything we've shared together, have been nothing but lies. He's been lying to me all this time, keeping something like this from me. It's clear on their angry faces that they're just as betrayed as me.

It feels like shards of broken glass are slowly slicing open my heart - The pain is excruciating and relentless. It hurts to breathe, to think, to move. I feel like passing out from sheer exhaustion of trying to support myself on shaky legs.

I'm in disbelief…This isn't real... None of it is real…

"Antonio, stop!" I scream as he crunches the bones of Lucas's hand beneath his boot.

"What do we do to traitors, Lucas?" he asks, ignoring me entirely.

"Antonio!" I shriek, not even earning a glance.
