“It really is, isn’t it? Good to see you,” I say, picking up speed and walking faster than I ever have past him.
“Where’s the fire? Is Autumn meeting you for a fifty percent off sale on day-old sticky buns at Seredipity’s Coffee Shop, again?” he asks as I wiz past him.
We did that like one time, but somehow, he’s never let us live it down.
“Delicious pastries wait for no man,” I call over my shoulder to him. “Bye, Briggs.”
I don’t listen for his reply as I make it out of the side exit and almost home free as I step out into the employee parking lot.
I get to my car door, open it and then shut it as quickly as possible.
I take a quick sigh of relief.
Until I hear a knock on my window.
I scream bloody murder as I whip a look at the person at my window and grab my chest with my right hand.
Tessa.
She’s never here this early.
I roll down my window.
“Hi,” I say, I wasn’t expecting you.
“You literally screamed like that last blonde alive in a slasher movie. What is going on? Are you ok?”
I take a deep breath and let it out.
“Yes, I’m fine. I just wasn’t expecting you. You startled me.”
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to freak you out. I’m meeting Shawnie and Juliet here early to review party plans before Juliet drives back home to Vancouver.”
I just nod far too much for the information given to me.
“Are you sure you’re ok? I’m a little early. We can make some coffee in the breakroom and chat before the girls get here,” she offers.
The last thing I need is to tell her that Slade and I kissed.
I told her that sex with him was a one-time thing, and now that we ripped off the band-aid, I wouldn’t be going near him again. If I admitted to kissing him again, she would give me that Tessa grin that always means she knows more than you do about what’s about to happen.
"Yeah, I'm golden… just a little jumping this morning. I killed a spider on my desk and thought he might be back for vengeance," I say, pulling up the most bizarre excuse.
She just nods, understanding exactly what I mean.
“Ok, well, I’ll be here when you come back for work. Come find me later if you want to get lunch and talk, ok?”
I nod again and then press the push start button on my car.
“Thanks. I’m just going to take a shower, and then I’ll be back.”
She doesn’t ask why I’m not just showering here since I usually always do. She’s being merciful and letting me go.
I watch her walk towards the side entrance and disappear inside, and then I pull out of my parking spot and head for The Commons.
I park in the parking garage and then take the elevator up to my apartment.
Walking into my bathroom, the shower is a welcome sight. I push open the curtain and turn on the shower water but the shower head only drips water.
