Page 55 of The Ones We Hate

“How was it really?” Jayla asked eagerly, propping her chin up on her knees as she hugged her legs to her chest. Pearl was hanging on Piper’s every word, too. The pang of guilt for not behaving like a role model with a good representation of love for her sister and Jayla made Piper’s face fall. She knew she avoided love like the plague, but she didn’t want that for them.

“It wasn’t exactly romantic,” Piper said.

“Scale of one to ten?” Amala asked.

“Eleven,” Piper replied and then buried her face in her hands. “I don’t know. Maybe I’ve just had really bad sex up until now?”

“Both can be true,” Talia said softly. “When you’re with the person you’re supposed to be with, it’s better.”

“Ugh.” Piper adamantly shook her head. “I’m not supposed to be with Leo. I promise. We already decided this was never happening again.”

“Why does it have to never happen again if you liked it?” Pearl asked.

“Because we still hate each other,” Piper argued.

“I just don’t get why you hate him,” Jayla chimed in. “Coop said it’s because he told you what to do in high school. I tell everyone what to do all the time, and you still like me.”

“Leo’s a prick about it. You’re not,” Piper said simply.

“How could it possibly be that good if you don’t like him?” said Pearl, once again coming in with the hard-hitting questions.

“I don’t know.” Piper groaned. “We were kinda pissed off the whole time, and he made me… explicitly say things… in a mean way?”

“Oh.” Amala’s eyes went wide, and she looked at Talia. “So, the opposite of you and Walker.”

“I mean, he’s not mean, per se.” Talia grinned sheepishly at her hands.

Piper was about to voice her complaint about having to hear about her aunt and uncle’s sex life when Pearl made a loud, disgusted sound.

“Gross,” Pearl gagged.

“Mom, old people don’t get to talk about sex,” Jayla complained.

“You wanted to join this conversation,” Amala pointed out. “Fuck around and find out. I can start talking about your dad and—”

“I’m out!” Jayla got up from the bed, and Pearl seemed to match her embarrassment as she, too, bolted toward the door.

Pearl paused just before the doorway and looked back at Piper with a glint of excitement in her wide doe eyes. “Come find me later, and we’ll put the new sheets on my bed?”

“Um… yes to the first part.” Piper grimaced. It seemed to dawn on Pearl’s face a second later when she gasped loudly.

“You didn’t!”

“I already ordered new ones. They’ll be here in three days.” Piper’s voice cracked.

All she got in response from her sister was a look of disgust before Pearl made a quick exit.

Amala waited patiently for Pearl to disappear safely behind the door before she folded her hands in her lap and looked over at Talia. “Now that I got rid of them, advice time?”

“Advice time,” Talia parroted.

The air in the room suddenly grew serious, and Piper wondered what advice they thought she needed and why they couldn’t give it with Jayla and Pearl in the room.

“I don’t need advice. We’re done. It’s not going to happen again.” Piper tried to get up from her seat to leave when her aunt hit her with a glare.

“Sit down,” Talia said in her parenting voice and pointed to Piper’s chair.

Amala hummed thoughtfully and nodded, and Piper felt like she was about to get an earful as she slowly dropped back into her seat.
