I throw the bottle on the passenger seat and bang my hand down on the steering wheel several times. I’m fucked up. One minute I’m fine, and the next, I’m frustrated and angry.

I’m about to lie back in my seat and close my eyes when movement from my right catches my attention. I sit up straight when I see Clark and the bitch standing at the front of the building. I’m too far away for them to see me, but I can see them as clear as day. My anger turns into excitement. This is the first time I’ve seen her in weeks. I laugh to myself when I realize that’s who Clark is visiting here. I always knew she was batshit crazy.

I watch them walk away from the building and down a path. I watch until they’re out of sight, but I can’t just sit here when I know how close they are. I never thought I’d get this close to Kally again without breaking into Clark’s house, which was next on my list.

I get out of the car, take a rolled-up smoke from behind my ear, and light it, drawing in the smoke until my lungs burn. I walk along the path in the shadows of the trees until I see exactly who I want to see in front of me. I keep back, remaining unseen. I don’t want to draw attention to myself yet.

“It’s beautiful out here,” I hear Kally say.

It won’t be beautiful by the time I’m finished with her. I’ll ruin every precious moment for her. She’ll never be able to look anywhere without it reminding her of me.

Women are weak, son. You’re the boss. Never let a woman dictate to you, do you hear me?

I fucking hear you, old man. I hear nothing else. I smack my head with the heel of my hand, but it does nothing but hurt me. It only makes me angrier with the whole situation. It would be so easy to walk away and hide in the shadows for the rest of my life, but that’s a weak way out. I’ll only stop when I get revenge on every single person who has done me wrong. I’ll only be happy when every single one of those assholes is begging me for mercy.

Chapter 25

Clark

I’d missed three calls from Caleb Shawland while I was visiting Kally, but the moment my car is on the highway, I dial his number through hands-free.

“Clark, you must be the hardest person to get hold of.”

“Sorry, buddy. I got to visit Kally this afternoon. I left my cell in the car. What’s up?”

The silence is deafening, but it only lasts a couple of moments.

“We’ve picked up something on the hidden cameras. At first, we didn’t think anything of it because, well, it’s a lane, and all cars can sit there, but Clay is concerned.”

“Okay. I’m listening.”

“The lane leading along the side of your house leads to an abandoned farmhouse, right?”

“Right. It’s been abandoned for years. Why?”

“We haven’t been watching that camera because at the beginning there was nothing to watch. However, Clay clicked it on two days ago, and there has been a car in the lane. The car isn’t registered, but it moves when you move.”

“What? As in, it follows me?”

“We can’t be sure because once you’ve left the house we don’t have any eyes on you, but it looks that way.”

“What’s the color of the car?”

“A black beaten-up Mustang.”

It’s not a car that sounds familiar, but it’s something we need to follow up on.

“Which means if this car is following you, it will know where Kally is.”

I growl with frustration. Why the fuck does this keep happening? For two weeks I’ve kept her safe. One afternoon I let my guard down, and this happens.

“I was too excited about seeing Kally that I completely forgot about threats.”

“Don’t beat yourself up. I’ve spoken with Gail Bellingham. She said no one can get into the facility, and Kally won’t be leaving the building unless she’s with you.”

“This is fucked up. She should be allowed to sit at a lake without this bullshit. How is she ever going to feel safe at the clinic when he’s sniffing around just waiting to pounce like the animal he is?”

“He’ll fuck up one of these times, buddy. The police are just waiting to lock his ass up, and he’ll be locked up for a very long time. Just hang in there. The clinic is the safest place for Kally to be. I’ve contacted your security and they’re going to do perimeter searches. The police are going to stop by and try to catch him unawares as well.”
