“What do I do?”

I seem to be asking that question a lot lately because I’m out of my fucking depth.

“Nothing. Go about your daily life as you are now. Leave this stuff up to the professionals, Clark.”

I nod.

“How is Kally?” asks Caleb.

I like how he’s trying to distract me from the situation. “She’s getting there. She looked much better today. She asked about you.”

“When she’s up to it, tell her to give me a call. I’d like to catch up with her since I never got to say goodbye.”

“I will. I’m sure she’d like that.”

“I’m going to head off now, but if you need anything, just give us a call. We might not be close, but we have ties to your security and police there. We can do more than you realize.”

“Thanks, Caleb. Again.”

“No worries. Take care.”

The line goes dead, and I hit my hand on the steering wheel. How can I go from being so happy ten minutes ago to this worked-up mess? All because of my asshole brother. I’m angry at myself for letting my guard down, but this is what it’s going to be like until Colton meets his maker.

Chapter 26

Clark

“What’s going on out there? It’s impossible to get in here, even more so than normal,” says Damien as I down the large Jim Beam I’ve been nursing.

“The asshole knows where Kally is. He’s been stalking the house, me, you. Anyone who leaves here. We’re onto his hiding space, but up until an hour ago, he hasn’t returned.”

“What? How? Where?” Damien drops onto the couch opposite me and leans his elbows on his knees.

“My own fucking security didn’t know about it, but Shawland Security—who are at the opposite side of the country—could call me and tell me about it.”

“And how does he know about Kally?”

“Because they reckon he probably followed me this afternoon.”

“You got to see her?”

Shit. I’ve been so carried away that I forgot to tell Damien about my meeting with Kally.

I nod. “Yeah. It was a last-minute thing that I didn’t want to turn down. She’s doing well. I saw a big change in her today. I don’t want Colton getting anywhere near her because it will set her back, and God knows if she’ll ever come back from more wrath from that dickhead.”

“This is fucked up. It’s like we’re living in a movie. He’s supposed to be family. What the fuck is wrong with him?”

I shake my head and stand up. Walking over to the decanter, I pour us both a drink. “I keep going over our upbringing just to find something that could make me excuse his behavior, but there isn’t one single thing. He had it all. Our father’s attention, money on tap. He wanted for nothing. If anything, we had the short straw.”

I just don’t understand how he could turn out so bad. Our father might be a heartless bastard, but Colton even beats that. He’s evil to the core. There is no coming back from this.

“What do we do now? It’s not like we have Shawland Security here.”

I shake my head. “I’ve told everyone we’re on lockdown. No one leaves this house without me or you. Even then, it needs to be life or death. Caleb and Clay are keeping an eye on things from their end. They’re in touch with the police as we speak. They’re just waiting for Colton to return to his hiding place.” I shake my head and laugh. “The fucked-up thing is, the country lane that runs along the side of this house is no fucking hiding spot. He’s been right under my nose the whole time. He’s probably laughing at us.”

“We’ll have the last laugh. Colton isn’t smart.”

“He’s clearly smarter than we’ve ever given him credit for.”
