Griz hesitated for a second, then lifted himself up so that he could get a look out of the window. Becca almost grabbed him and pulled him back down, thinking that it was crazy to get up at all, ever, but they needed to know what was happening.

His shoulders relaxed as he peered through the shattered remnants of the window and Becca started to think the ordeal might actually be over.

“It’s Ripper,” he said.

24

“Ripper?”

“Yeah, Griz. It’s all clear out here. Are you two okay?”

“Yeah,” Griz said. “What happened?”

“I heard the gunshots and looped back around to see what the fuck was going on,” Ripper said. “Good thing I did.”

“It was Death’s Head, right?” Griz said.

“Two of them. Out here in the trees, with AKs.”

“You’re sure that’s all of them?”

“Yeah, I’m sure,” Ripper said. “They’d be shooting at me right now if there were any more of them.”

Griz got up and looked through the shattered window at the trees all around. There was no sign of anything moving, other than Ripper, who waved at him from where the gunfire had come from.

It looked like there was a body at his feet, but Griz couldn’t tell from here. Everything seemed like it was okay now, though.

“Look, you and I can go sweep around if you think that’s a good idea,” Ripper said.

“Becca, stay here,” Griz said. “Call Wyatt and Kate, let them know what happened.”

“Griz…” Becca said.

“You’ll be safe in here. Ripper and I are going to have a quick look around. But he’s right, if there were any more out there, they’d still be shooting at him. Stay here just in case.”

Griz stepped out of the cabin carefully, gun in hand, his eyes scouring the trees. There was nothing moving, nothing at all except for Ripper.

Ripper waved him over to the tree where he was standing. Griz made his way over to him, and sure enough, there was a body lying at Ripper’s feet.

As he got closer, Griz could see the distinctive Grim Reaper tattoo that marked the dead man as Death’s Head. Next to the body, an AK-47 rifle lay, and there were spent shell casings scattered all around him as well.

“Saw this sumbitch blazing away at the cabin like bullets were going out of style,” Ripper said. “He didn’t even hear me as I came up on him. Too busy pulling the trigger, and with the gunfire, he couldn’t hear shit, I guess. I got right up on him and shot him in the head before he knew I was there.”

“You said there were two?” Griz said.

“There’s the other one,” Ripper said, pointing a short distance away at another body. “Once I shot this first guy, Number Two there realized what was happening, but unlucky for him, he’d just emptied his AK at the cabin. So he started digging around trying to get a new mag in his gun, and I lit his ass up.”

“Lucky,” Griz said.

“Yeah. The element of surprise is a beautiful thing.”

“All the same,” Griz said. “You took a hell of a chance, Ripper.”

Ripper knelt down next to the first body and picked up the AK-47. He looked it over, took out the magazine, checked the chamber. His hands seemed to linger on the weapon, almost caressing it.

“I’d say we should keep the AKs,” he said, “but we don’t know what other crimes they might’ve done with them. Traceable, you know?”

“We should get rid of them,” Griz said.
