“Yeah. Now that I think about it, I’ll need to dump this pistol, too.”

“Right,” Griz said. “I mean it, Ripper, you took a big chance, taking on two guys with AKs with just your pistol.”

“Had to,” Ripper said with a shrug. “One of my brothers was in trouble. Besides, the first one was easy. Snuck right up on him while he was shooting at the cabin. He couldn’t hear me over the noise.”

“Still,” Griz said. “I owe you.”

“Bah,” Ripper said, waving that off.

They both stood and stared down at the bodies for a bit longer before Ripper spoke again.

“Look, man,” he said, “I don’t know how you want to play this, but I’m thinking we get rid of these bodies and leave the local PD out of it. I mean, technically, it was self-defense and all, but I do have a few dark spots on my record and my possession of a firearm might cause some issues.”

“No, you’re right,” Griz said. “No need to complicate anything.”

“We bury them out here in the woods, and nobody’s the wiser,” Ripper said. “That sound about right?”

Griz nodded. “We’ve got shovels in the shed. And a wheelbarrow to move the bodies.”

“All right, let’s get to it, then,” Ripper said. “I hate digging holes, but I hate doing time, more.”

Griz got two shovels and the wheelbarrow out of the shed and brought them over to where Ripper had pointed out the first body. He grabbed the arms, and Ripper grabbed the legs, and they man-handled the first dead man into the wheelbarrow.

The dead man’s arms and legs splayed out of the wheelbarrow awkwardly, and it only got worse when they dumped the second dead man on top of him. Griz did the best he could to navigate the wheelbarrow through the trees, away from the cabin, even though the shifting weight of the bodies constantly threatened to tilt the wheelbarrow over and spill them out.

As he and Ripper walked, Griz kept replaying what had just happened in his mind. How had Death’s Head found him? This was the second time they seemed to be able to sniff out either him or Becca someplace when they’d been well hidden.

It seemed like an odd coincidence that they showed up right when Ripper had left. Normally, Griz didn’t believe in coincidence, and would’ve been suspicious about this, but then, if Ripper was the cause of the problem, why did he help out and kill the two Death’s Head? Why not let them kill him and Becca?

Plus, it just didn’t seem possible that Ripper could’ve been behind this. He’d known the man forever. Sure, Ripper and his dad had butted heads over the years, but it had never gotten violent.

Ripper may have complained loudly and often about not being able to make easy money dealing coke, but he’d never shown the slightest sign of disloyalty. Quite the opposite. Most of the MC thought of him as one of the OG members of the crew.

“I think this is good,” Ripper said, looking around at the trees.

They were far out of sight of anything resembling human contact. The cabin was already secluded, and they’d been walking for quite a while where there were no paths to be found.

“The only eyes out here belong to the deer and the raccoons,” Ripper said.

“And they don’t snitch,” Griz said.

“Ha! Good one,” Ripper said, pulling one of the shovels off of his shoulder and jamming it into the ground.

After taking a moment to hand the second shovel to Griz, Ripper started to dig. Griz joined in, glad to have something simple to do to keep his hands occupied while he thought things over.

Ripper didn’t talk as they dug, either. For a while, there was no other sound than the two of them digging, breathing more and more heavily with their exertions.

It had been a while since Griz had to dig a hole like this. He’d forgotten how long it took to actually dig a large enough hole for a grave, even with two of them doing it.

After a while, Ripper finally said something to break the silence. “Fucking Death’s Head.”

“Yeah,” Griz said.

“Bad enough they pull this shit, now we have to spend half the day digging this fucking hole.”

“Inconsiderate of them,” Griz said.

“Ha! Yeah,” Ripper said, kicking at one of the bodies. “Assholes.”
