“What do you mean?” Benny said.

Becca took the two cell phones out and showed them to Benny. “We have these cell phones that we really need to get a look inside. If you could help us out with that, it would be amazing.”

“I… I don’t know,” Benny said, scratching at his head. “I have many things to take care of. Many responsibilities. Many groups to monitor, to track and watch their schemes.”

“Look, we’re really in a jam, here. We’re pretty sure there’s some schemers out there trying to get us, and… well, the stuff on these cell phones could really make a big difference,” she said, laying a hand on Benny’s arm. “So come on, Obi-Wan. You have to help me. You’re my only hope.”

Benny jumped a little at her touch, but only a little. He looked at the phones, at her wide and pleading eyes, and then quickly back down at the phones.

“I suppose I could find some time,” he said. “I can’t promise anything. No promises. There are many dark forces at work out there and only me to monitor them.”

“Oh, my God, you are the best!” Becca said.

Benny shrugged and gave her another tiny smile. Looking at Kate this time, he said, “Is Wyatt okay? I saw his leg.”

“He’ll be fine,” Kate said. “He’s been worried about you too, Benny.”

“What about the big guy?” Benny said. “The hairy guy?”

“Oh, don’t worry about him,” Becca said. “He’s like a Wookie.”

“She even calls him ‘Chewie’,” Kate said.

“I do,” Becca said with a proud grin.

“Hmm. Well. All right. All right.”

“Great! Thank you so much, Benny,” Becca said, looking around the trailer. “You know, maybe Kate and I should come back out here soon and check on you. Help you clean up a little bit.”

She meant it, too. She didn’t like the idea of Benny stuck out here in the woods, all alone, surrounded by nothing but circuit boards and dirty dishes.

“I was just thinking that same thing,” Kate said. “And I do want you to take your meds. I worry about you out here all alone.”

“Yeah, Obi-Wan!” Becca said, nudging Benny gently on the arm. “You have to take care of yourself! We need you!”

“Okay,” Benny said, and now he was full-on grinning. “Okay. I promise. You have to… you have to call first. I have to make sure it’s safe. The coast is clear. The government has eyes everywhere.”

“I promise,” Becca said. “Either me or Kate or maybe even the Wookie will call you. But we have to go now.”

“Thanks again for this, Benny,” Kate said.

“Sure,” Benny said. “Sure. See you. Very busy. Very very busy.”

Becca and Kate stepped out of the trailer and back into the clearing, heading back toward the car. As they walked, Becca could feel the weight of her sister staring at her.

“What?” Becca said.

“You,” Kate said. “In there. With Benny. It was like watching some sort of savant.”

“Shut up,” Becca laughed off.

“You’ve always been persuasive, Becca, but damn, I didn’t know you could dothat,” Kate said.

“Well, you’re not the only sister with skills. What did you say was wrong with him?”

“Manic-depressive,” Kate said. “Paranoid schizophrenic.”

Becca looked back at the lonely trailer set out in the middle of the clearing. “Doesn’t he have anyone to check up on him?”
