“You do?” Griz said.

“Oh, yeah, man, there’s nothing out there. I used to take girls there to fuck them in my car when I was still in high school. Great spot.”

“What can you tell us about it?” Griz said.

“That if anything goes crazy, nobody will be around to hear it. It’s a wide open field and there’s a bunch of trees on one side of it. I think it used to belong to some rich guy who died and nobody ended up doing anything with the land. Something like that.”

“So we know the place and we know the time,” Wyatt said. “What about the players?”

“It’s supposed to be one vehicle, two guys,” Griz said. “They’re bringing the guns for us to check out.”

“Do we know what kind of guns?” Wyatt said.

“No, but Ripper made it sound like they would be military issue. That’s why I want you there with me when I do this deal, Pony. You know those weapons better than any of us.”

“You got it, Griz,” Pony said.

Something looked off with Pony, though, and Griz knew better than to let it lie. If any one of his guys had a concern, he needed to know about it.

“What is it?” he said.

Pony shrugged. “Um….”

“Look, man, you can speak freely with me. I don’t want anyone hanging back with their opinions.”

“Thanks, Griz,” Pony said. “I know I’m new and all, but this talk about dealing with the cartel has me a little concerned.”

“Good,” Wyatt said.

“Good?” Pony said.

“We’re all concerned about it, man,” Wyatt said.

“Can you be more specific, Pony?” Griz said.

“Just stuff I heard.”

“Fill us in.”

“Some of the guys I served with had some experience down in Mexico with that sort of thing,” Pony said. “When you go Special Forces, the military will send you all over the place to train friendly forces. To help them out, you see?”

“Right,” Griz said. “So some of our guys went to Mexico?”

“It’s a war in everything but name down there, so yeah. They sent guys down there to train the Mexican federal army. Tactics, weapons, all so that they could fight the cartels more efficiently and maybe slow down the drug trade coming to the US.”

“Why am I thinking there’s more to the story?” Griz said.

“Because there is. Mexico is… complicated, we’ll call it. A bunch of these federal army guys, all now trained and equipped by US Special Forces, decided they’d be better off if they went and formed their own cartel. So they did.”

“Doesn’t that just figure,” Wyatt said with a bitter laugh.

“So what are you saying?” Griz said.

“I’m saying these guys are no joke. They’re every bit as twisted as Death’s Head, but these guys are trained. Organized. Deadly.”

“I feel like Death’s Head is pretty dangerous,” Wyatt said, nodding at his injured leg.

“It’s not the same,” Pony said. “I didn’t want to say anything at that meeting after our shootout, but…”
