Sten pulled his phone from his pocket and dialed Goliath. “Frederick, do you know if any problems have popped up today that have required Eamerson’s attention?”
“No, everyone’s honoring the funeral rites. I don’t think anyone would break that.”
“No, I didn’t think so either.”
“I saw him headed for the hangar, though.”
“When?”
“Ten minutes ago.”
“Do you know where he was going?”
“He didn’t say. Do you think there’s trouble?”
“Yes, I think we should follow him in case there’s trouble, but hang back far enough that he doesn’t notice you. I’ll meet you in the sky.”
“Yes, sir.”
Sten turned off the phone. “I have a bad feeling about this. Will you humor me and check the seal? We need to ensure we have the right one.”
“Fuck. That’s not good.” Jori rushed toward the vault, going through the unlocking process much faster than previous times.
He went straight for the velvet bag that held the seal and pulled it free. “It doesn’t have the chain loops.”
“It’s the duplicate?” Kymri asked.
Jori nodded.
Sten was already moving back toward the terrace.
“The only reason I can think of that he would switch them, allowing the librarian to escape with the real one, would be to take it for himself.”
“And Marli is trailing her.” Kymri rushed alongside them to the terrace. “I can’t fucking shift anymore.”
Elora put a hand on her shoulder. “Frederick is going out after them.”
“How fast is he?” she demanded of Sten.
“Not as fast as I am.” As soon as he reached the terrace, he stripped down.
Jori was pulling off his shirt, too.
Sten stopped him. “I strongly suggest you stay here. We don’t know if he’s working with anyone that could be looking for an opportunity to come after your family. And I just sent Goliath and his deputies off mountain to pursue him.”
“I can fly—”
“This isn’t about that. If Eamerson isn’t what we thought he was, then we have no idea what plans have been in effect all this time or what will happen next. I suggest you take your family down into the mountain. Maybe even those tunnels, now that you have the key to access them.”
“We’re not hiding,” Kymri spat.
“Odson, Carson and Bayn are still here. They’re spending time with the tribe down in the dining hall.” Elora said.
“Good, go spend some time with them.” Sten said before shifting into his dragon form and launching into the sky.
If he touches her, I’ll rip him apart.
