We couldn’t change the past and the future was uncertain.
There was only here and now.
I reached for one of his white dress shirts and slipped it on. It was tight on me, but I left it unbuttoned.
Then I continued my unpacking efforts until I was interrupted by my phone buzzing.
Reed: I’m five minutes out, are you still awake?
Tate: Silly question. I’ve hardly slept all week.
Reed: Tell me about it. I’ve been dreaming about curling up next to you.
Tate: Don’t forget our cats. They’ve been seriously displeased with only having me around.
Reed: Obvi LOL. The only thing I want is you and our bed. And a bath. Exciting, right?
Tate: Just wait
My heart was pounding hard and fast.
I headed for the front door, waiting, and watching. Finally, a few minutes later, the car pulled into the driveway.
In Reed’s shirt, my ratty old shorts, and a pair of flip flops, I walked outside. The driver opened his door.
“I got it from here,” I announced. “Thanks.”
The driver nodded and got back in.
I opened the back door and held out my hand. Reed all but tumbled out of the car and into my arms.
“Fuck, I’ve missed you,” I confessed. “Welcome home.”
I felt him tremble, and I held on tighter.
“You don’t know how happy I am right now,” Reed replied, his voice muffled against my shoulder. “I missed you so much.”
“Before you kiss me and I forget what day it is, where’s your luggage?” I asked.
“Back seat,” he whispered, and kissed my cheek.
I reluctantly let go of him and bent down to retrieve his suitcase, pulling it out and then slamming the door shut.
With Reed’s hand in my right, and his carry-on in my left, we headed inside.
“I don’t want to damper our reunion, but I’m fucking exhausted,” Reed admitted.
“Sleep first,” I replied as I put the bag down. “You, me, and our California king.”
Reed’s eyes suddenly welled up.
“Baby, it’s going to be okay, I promise,” I whispered, cupping his face. “You still feeling anxious?”
“No, I’m better,” he shook his head. “I’m just really fucking glad to be home.”
I smiled at him. “All my stuff is here.”
“That’s great, but that’s not what I meant. When I say home, I mean being with you.”
