Scrolling through messages, I’m just now noticing the message thread between me and Fabio is gone. That psycho went through my phone!

“Kat!” Iris bounds over to me, with Lily and Darius trailing behind her. “Here’s my partner in crime,” I tell her, and she giggles as I pick her up and give her a bear hug.

“Thanks for watching her,” Lily tells me, her and Darius having caught up.

“My pleasure,” I say, putting Iris down.

“Have fun.” Lily kisses the top of her daughter’s head.

“Fun is my middle name,” I declare.

“I thought trouble is your middle name?” Iris asks, and I chuckle. I previously made that joke to Iris, but the kid’s a literalist.

“No trouble,” Darius says, the warning implicit. Great, even my own flesh and blood doubts me. “Rainbow goddess.” His face softens as he hugs his stepdaughter.

“Bye, sweetie. Love you,” Lily calls to her daughter who’s over the goodbyes and ready to play; she sprints to the playground.

“You two have fun,” I tell them, hurrying to catch up to Iris.

“Kat, help me!” Iris grunts as she reaches for the monkey bars in vain.

Smiling, I grab her by the waist and lift her. She grabs a hold and I keep my hands near to assist as she makes her way to the end.

“Did it!” she says proudly as she lets go, and my eyes go wide as I grab her, stopping her fall and bringing her back down safely to her feet.

“Wow! That was amazing! I didn’t know you were a professional climber,” I tell her.

“Thanks, but I’m not a professional climber,” she informs me.

Something catches her eye over my shoulder, and I follow her gaze, my lips turning into a frown. “Uncle Fabio!” Iris waves at Mr. Psycho strolling towards us with two chocolate ice cream cones.

“Iris.” Fabio flashes his dimples at Iris. “Katerina.” He loses his smile when he addresses me, and I stop myself from clenching my fists. I’ve kissed and licked those divots in his cheeks, and it enrages me he can so easily pretend I haven’t. Just like him deleting our messages—like that perfect weekend meant nothing. “I thought you ladies might like ice cream.”

“Yes!” Iris jumps up and down as he hands her the cone. “Thank you,” she says excitedly.

“Of course.” Fabio smiles at her before offering me the other cone.

“Thanks.” I grab it and march over to the nearest trash can, giving the cone a toss.

“Kat, that wasn’t nice,” Iris informs me when I return.

“Some things you think are sweet turn out to be bitter,” I tell her, looking pointedly at Fabio.

“I don’t understand,” she says, licking her cone. “My ice cream is sweet.”

“I hope you never understand,” I tell her sincerely.

She takes another lick before shrugging and announcing, “Gotta go.” She takes off toward the swings with ice cream dripping down her arm.

“Why are you here?” I snap.

“What’s got you so bitter, Katerina?” Fabio muses. “Thinking about my bed warmers got you all riled up?”

“Not bitter; you know I’m sweet as sugar. Don’t you remember how sweet my pussy tasted? You ate it nonstop for an entire weekend,” I taunt, ignoring his comment, even though he hit the nail on the head. Just the thought of him with another woman has me wanting to claw someone’s eyes out.

His nostrils flare, and I go to walk away, but he grabs me by the wrist. “In our fantasy game, why didn’t you write anything down?”

“We promised not to look at the loser’s paper!” I shout-whisper.
