He cocks his head. “That’s a moot point because you threw the game. I want to know why.”

“Maybe you don’t inspire any fantasies for me, Fabio,” I say in a bored tone.

He laughs darkly, jerking me inches from his face. “I don’t need to give you sodium thiopental to know that’s a fucking lie.”

“Kat, come swing with me!” Iris calls, and I’m thankful for the distraction.

Fabio releases his hold of my wrist, and I make my way to the other side of the playground. Unfortunately, Mr. Psycho keeps pace with me. I ignore how good he smells as I walk over to Iris, plopping down in the empty swing next to her. “Are you finished with your ice cream?”

She’s torn between the ice cream in her hand and her inability to swing without the use of both hands. “Yes.”

“Here,” I say, taking the sticky, half-eaten cone. “Uncle Fabio forgot the napkins,” I snipe. “Grab the wipes out of my purse,” I order him, shoving my bag at him with my clean hand.

“Kat, that’s not nice. You should say please,” Iris informs me.

“Yes, Katerina, say please.” Fabio mocks; no doubt he’s remembering how I begged for his dick.

“Please, Fabio,” I say sweetly, scratching the side of my cheek with my middle finger to where only he can see.

He chuckles as he unzips my purse and pulls out a pack of wipes. “Here you are, ladies.” He opens the flap and hands me and Iris one.

“Thank you,” Iris chirps, wiping her hands and then holding it out for him. “All done.”

I try not to snicker as he makes a face, grabbing the chocolate-covered wipe. “Thank you, all done.” I mimic Iris’ sweet tone, handing him my wipe.

“No problem.” Fabio begins walking to the trash can.

“Wait, give me back my purse!” I chase after him.

Before I can reach him, he shoves his hand inside. “If you need to go through my phone again, how about asking this time,” I grumble.

He pulls out my new pack of cigarettes, giving me a disapproving look.

“You don’t get a say in my life, Fabio,” I say dismissively.

“Seems I do.” He tosses the pack in the trash.

“The most toxic man I’ve ever met is worried about my health?” I snort a laugh, snatching my purse from him.

“Somebody needs to worry.” It’s his turn to snort. “I’ve yet to see evidence of your supposed self-preservation skills.”

“I went to the gym this morning; Gavin is a new trainer at Ace’s Wild. I’m going to push him to float my name to Inferno about dealing. If things work out, we’ll see if this Inferno guy is connected to your man John Davis. The basement of Ace’s has been cleared out, so I doubt future parties are going to be held at the gym,” I report quietly. “I didn’t have a chance to get more info out of Gavin, but I’ll keep trying. There; happy?”

“Are you fucking Gavin?” Fabio demands.

“Now who’s bitter?” I taunt.

“Gavin will be when my poison seeps through his veins,” he menaces.

“Your distrust for me is what’s poisoning your damn mind,” I bite at him. “Why would I try to screw over the family? One, I love Darius, and I’d never hurt him like that. Two, I happen to enjoy my life and would like to continue living it. It’s so fucking dumb, and the fact you can’t see it makes me hate you that much more!” I stomp back to Iris, plopping down on the swing next to her.

“Uncle Fabio, are you going to kiss Kat?” Iris wonders as she swings back and forth.

“Katerina doesn’t want me to kiss her,” Fabio says, walking behind Iris and giving her an extra boost.

“Whee!” Iris exclaims.

“I wonder why that is,” I mutter, pushing myself off with my feet as I begin swinging.
