“Hold up a second,” he smirked when we both heard Bailey rip into Mike. “Let her blow off some steam. May make her more amiable.”

“When pigs fly, brother.”

“I don’t give a flying fuck what they did. Fucker probably deserved it, and you know it, Mike. Now, are you going to let them go, or am I moving in here with you? Because I can. I have a to-go bag ready at all times. Say the word and I’m your new roomie.”

“Now, Bailey, I need you to calm down.”

King muttered, shaking his head. “Wrong thing to say, Mike.”

“Don’t you tell me to calm down, Mike Brewer. You don’t scare me! I want to see my husband, right fucking now! If you don’t produce him in the next minute, I’m calling Beth and insisting you be my Lamaze coach!”

In the next second, we both heard the station door open.

“Who is in charge of this cartoon operation!” my granny yelled, and it was my turn to groan.

“And who are you?” Mike asked.

“My name is Martha Steiner, and you must be Barney Fife! I want my grandson released from this second-rate, club fed right now before I buy this pissant town and have you sweeping the streets with a toilet brush!”

“You tell him, Martha,” Bailey encouraged as I heard the door open again.

It was grand fucking central at the station tonight.

“FRANK!” my woman yelled loudly. “Where’s Frank?”

“Jesus fucking Christ,” Pyro gasped. “That’s it. I’m not babysitting any of you ladies ever again. All of you are fucking mean as hell.”

“Oh, shut up, Chase,” Lidi clipped, slamming her hand down on the counter. “Linda, wake the hell up. I want to see Frank.”

“No need to yell, Claudia,” the older woman groaned. “Both men are being processed.”

“KING!” Bailey screamed loudly at the top of her lungs.

“Jesus, Cupcake, I’m right here.” King smiled, slapping Mike on the back. “Best let me handle her, Mike. She’s gotten cranky since she found out the other day that Buy-N-Go is no longer selling her double chocolate fudge ice cream.”

Mike stepped aside, waving King forward as Bailey ran into his arms.

“I came as soon as I heard,” Bailey said into King’s chest while Claudia walked over to me, tears in her eyes.

Gathering her close, I whispered, “I’ll get him back for you. I promise I will.”

“For the both of us,” she sniffed, looking up at me. “He is your son, after all. Isn’t that what you said?”

Nodding, I smiled.

“Damn right my Franklin is the dad. No one better,” Granny stated in agreement when she turned to Mike. “Now, produce my great-grandson.”

“I’m sorry, Mrs. Steiner, but he’s not here. He’s in the custody of Child Protective Services.”

“Why?” Claudia, Bailey, and my granny asked all at once when Claudia’s cellphone rang. Reaching into her bag, she picked it up.

“Hello? Oh God, Diana. What’s going on!” she cried.

“Baby, put her on speaker so we can all hear,” I implored gently.

Doing so, we heard Diana speak, “I’m so sorry, Lidi. I tried to find you at the hospital, but I must have just missed you.”

“Diana,” I said, speaking up. “It’s Frank. Where is Charlie?”
