“I’m glad.” He took a sip. “Have you talked about the future?”

“He asked me if I would consider a move to Maine.”

“Would you?”

“Yes.”

“You don’t mind leaving your family?”

“I’m going to miss this place. I’m going to miss you, and even Elliot, but will escaping from my family be a problem for me? No. I’m happy to leave them.”

“Good.” He nodded. “You can always come back to visit.”

She snorted. “I doubt that. It’s going to be a challenge to get my father’s permission to leave. Coming back might not be a safe option for me.”

The idea of leaving and never coming back was a little depressing, but it was nowhere near as bad as the concept of being forced into a mating she didn’t want.

Rafe swirled the liquid in his cup. “We’ll see.”

Vivian looked at the logs that made up the rafters. “He’s going to hate Callum. What if he doesn’t approve of the mating? What if he makes me stay here?”

“Is Callum worth a fight?”

Her gaze returned to Rafe. “One hundred percent.”

“Then we’ll find a way.”

They sat in silence for a few moments until Vivian said, “He’s encouraging me to go back to school. For event planning.”

While Rafe smiled frequently, they all meant different things. A true smile that showed genuine joy was rare, but one crossed his face at her words. “You’d be amazing at that.”

“Thanks. I think so too. And I’d enjoy it.”

“What else do you know about Callum?”

“He has a sister. His parents are retired. He’s the beta of his pack and he works at a BBQ manufacturing company. He speaks highly of his alpha. I get the feeling they’re very close.”

“Anything else?”

“No.” She brought her glass to her lips, but paused. “Is there something I should know?”

“He’s a ladies’ man.” Rafe ran a finger along the rim of his glass. “And I’m not telling you this to try and drive you away from him. I want you to be prepared.”

“What exactly do you mean?”

“From what Elliot has told me, Callum is a big flirt. Since he was in diapers. It’s his nature, it seems. He likes women and has continually pursued them. He’s never had a steady relationship and never stayed faithful to one woman.”

Vivian pursed her lips. Of course, he’d been too good to be true.

“Vee.” Rafe leaned forward and touched her knee. “That doesn’t mean that he won’t be faithful to you. He’s traveled all this way to find you. He’s shown that he wants to make sure a mating will make you happy. So my suggestion to you is this: if faithfulness is important to you, it’s something you should talk to him about now.”

“But–”

“Vee, he’s asked you for open communication. That includes uncomfortable topics.”

“He said he wanted a woman who keeps him in line. He wants a partner.”

“And a good partner wouldn’t let something like this pass without discussing it.”
