There’s a ripped pool table beyond the booths, and what was maybe once a dancefloor.

He goes to the far-right corner of the room and opens a door that looks like it belongs in a dungeon.

I exchange a glance with Toshi.

I can tell he’s anxious, and it makes me feel a little of the same.

I take his hand and give him some of my calming energy before he can get too stressed.

E.A. ducks a little to get through the doorway.

Leanne does the same on reflex though she probably didn’t need to.

I follow suit, and Toshi follows me, gasping in a breath when we realize it’s a tunnel rather than a room. It’s dark through here, with a sconce on the wall that has an open flame burning in it several steps into the narrow passage.

Okay. I’m starting to think this might actually be a dungeon.

Toshi holds my hand a little tighter as we move through the passage.

We come out into another room after a few minutes.

It’s small, and it’s also lit by open flame sconces rather than electricity.

What the fuck is this place?

“Welcome to the remains of Cressidan City’s first ever prison,” Victor says. “The perfect place to keep criminals behind bars if you want them to wish they’d never been born.”

He picks up a flashlight and switches it on.

Suddenly it’s bright enough to see there are two small cells in front of us, each holding one pissed off looking bad guy. The skinnier guy is sitting down, leaning against the wall. He scowls our way and then ignores us. Harlan West is standing with his meaty fists clenching the bars. He looks like he wants to kill someone. By the way he’s glowering at E.A., I think I know who.

“Hello, Harlan,” E.A. says.

“You’re going to regret this, Edgar.”

“I seriously doubt that,” I blurt.

He glowers at me. “Ah, the spunky little Omega. He hardly ever lets you out. Too bad. I could have found you some new friends to play with, Echo. My friends like to play rough. I bet you’d like that.”

Ugh. I feel like he just punched me in the stomach. I keel over and puke.

It’s hardly anything, but I feel queasy as hell after.

I spit on the ground and wipe my mouth.

“You have no friends,” I tell him. “You’ll find that out soon enough.

Toshi rubs my back. Leanne takes my free hand in hers.

I have them. He has no body.

He laughs, and the sound bounces off the walls around us.

God, this man is fucking awful.

“Enough,” E.A. commands, his voice booming loud in a way I’ve never heard before.

He steps forward. “You know why I’m here, Harlan. I’m not letting you out until you give me answers.”
