“Are you…are you really here? Are you back?”

I held my breath as a wide, devious smile spread across her face. “I’m back.”

“Part of me thought I would never see you again.” I fought the urge to reach out and touch her hair.

“And leave you here drowning yourself in whiskey?” When her eyes met mine, they sparkled. “I could never.”

She flipped her hair over her shoulder, and I could see faint scars on her neck from my teeth. The memories made it even harder for me to form a coherent response. “I—I’ve been trying to get back to normal after Marcus and the veil, but…”

“I know,” she interrupted. “Me, too. Theia is gone for good, now. She’s introduced me to the other goddesses, and she made a small effort to help me get settled in this new world. My father made sure she would be well-adjusted in her new mortal existence.”

A silence lingered.

“And? How does it feel to be the new Goddess of Light?”

Her breath hit my cheek as she exhaled. I caught myself leaning into it. “It feels like I really, really missed you. And I’m not sure any of this is worth it if it means living a life apart from you.”

My chest tightened. This was real. Lyra was back.

“Just kiss her already!” Salem yelled from behind me. “We can’t take any more of this!”

Lyra’s bright smile didn’t falter as I slid a hand around her waist, pulling her to me. This was everything I would ever need in this life, so perfect and pure.

The light in my darkness.

“Well?” she asked. “Are you going to kiss me, Alekzander Black?”

I pressed my lips to hers, tasting her lip gloss and reveling in the moment. She threw her arms around my shoulders, too, holding herself against me.

I only pulled away to reply, “For the rest of eternity.”

Epilogue

Lyra

“A heart bond?” I asked Alek as he sat next to me on his large leather couch. “You and I have…a heart bond? What does that mean, exactly?”

My chest tightened as I waited for him to answer. He leaned back on the couch next to me, relaxed. Confident.

His eyes held mine as he answered. “When I bit you the first time, it was normal. Like every other demon being bit in Night Raven. But when you bit me, when we shared blood with the heightened emotions we were feeling, it revealed a special bond. It’s different. Stronger.”

Okay. “What type of a bond? What does that mean?”

“It’s emotional, mostly. It’s the reason I can wield your magic at times when I drink your blood. It’s the reason I feel so damn protective of you when I think you’re in danger.” He picked my hands up in his and held them tight in his lap. “It’s the reason you take over every single thought in my mind.”

“Really?” I teased. “Because I thought all that was just because you were in love with me.”

He leaned in, hovering his lips dangerously close to mine. “Who says I’m not?”

Before he could kiss me, I backed up, just an inch. “Do demons typically heart bond with others?”

Alek’s eyes scanned my face. “It’s rare, but it happens. If it was fated in the stars before they bite each other, yeah. It can happen.”

Interesting.

“Are Natalie and Wrath heart bonded?”

Alek laughed quietly, still moving closer and closer to the couch. “If they aren’t already, they might be soon. But like I said, it’s fate. If their souls were meant to be together, they’ll heart bond.”
