“Aubrey?” a voice says, and I turn around to see Caleb standing there grinning at me. He was walking towards the same shop I was.

“Caleb, how’s it going?” I ask after stopping in front of him.

“Just grabbing a coffee before picking my niece up for the day,” he tells me.

I nod my head like I understand what he’s saying. “I just needed coffee,” I say awkwardly.

He chuckles at my words. “I need all the energy I can get. I’m taking her to the zoo today. Since the weather seems to be warming up, it seems like a perfect day for it.”

“Well, you have fun,” I say, trying to walk away.

“Why don’t you come with us? Unless you are busy?” he asks.

A chill runs down my spine. I look around, but see nothing out of the ordinary. Whatever it is, it’s not Caleb making me feel this way.

What would Gabe think of me spending the day with Caleb though? Then another thought comes; I don’t want to spend the day alone again.

“Sure,” I say before I can change my mind.

“Great. Let’s get some coffee,” he says and walks to open the door to the shop.

I really hope I don’t regret this.

I insist on paying for my own drink. Caleb tries to fight me on it, but I feel like it would be leading him on in some way if I let him buy me a coffee.

When we get to his brother’s place, there is a petite woman waiting for us. She smiles when she sees Caleb and raises her eyebrow when she catches a glimpse of me.

“Who’s this?” she asks smiling.

“Oh, this is a friend; Aubrey. Aubrey, this is my sister in-law, Whitney,” Caleb says, introducing us.

“Friend?” she asks with a grin.

“Just friends. I have a man, boyfriend, partner thing,” I stumble out. Great way to be awkward, Aubrey.

“Okay,” she says with a chuckle.

“Where’s Lucy?” Caleb asks, sounding amused.

“She’s getting ready and then she will be out,” Whitney says as we walk into their place and wait for his niece.

A man with a girl, who looks about six or seven, comes out. I can tell that the man is Caleb’s brother. They look very similar. I would almost mistake them for twins.

“Here she is,” the man says in a deep voice. The grin on his face would make me swoon if it wasn’t for both him and myself being taken already.

“Are you ready to go to the zoo?” Caleb asks before grabbing the jacket and boots Whitney hands him.

“Yes! We are going to have the best time ever!” the little blonde girl says, jumping up and down. Wow she really does have a lot of energy. I eye my coffee that I just happened to finish. I don’t think one will be enough.

“Can we have ice cream too?” the little girl asks while looking at Caleb with big, puppy dog eyes. Oh geez, I wouldn’t be able to say no to that face.

“Of course! It’s your day, after all,” Caleb says before standing up and picking up Lucy.

“I would love to get to know you,” Caleb’s brother says to me before turning to look at Caleb and continuing, “but you guys better get going so I can spend some time with my wife.”

I can’t help but smirk at his words.

I have a feeling I know what they will be doing while they are kid free today.
