My phone buzzes with a message as we take the elevator down.

Unknown Number: You sure are spreading yourself around.

Me: Who is this?

Unknown Number: I’ll be coming to take back what’s mine. You think you could just walk away that easily?

Me: Leave me alone.

A harsh breath leaves me. I have no doubt that Kalen is the one following me.

If I had known he was crazy, then maybe I would have steered clear of him. He seemed fine until I broke it off.

He only has himself to blame for how things ended between us.

“Are you okay?” Caleb asks, looking at me with concern.

“I’m fine. Nothing I can’t handle,” I tell him with a tight smile.

“If you need any help, let me know,” he says, and I can tell he’s serious by the look in his eyes.

I nod but don’t say anything.

Kalen is harmless. All bark and no bite.

What’s the worst that could happen?

Gabe

Work has consumed up so much of my time.

I don’t get to spend as much time with Aubrey as I want to.

I want to be there for everyone, but something has to give.

I work another late night. Chase and his brothers got a call that they need to take care of something.

We know what that means.

Sometimes, in our business, we have to take care of certain things that we don’t tell anyone about.

Sure, we protect people, but there are times when we have to go above and beyond. It has been like this forever; we would do anything to protect people in trouble.

I head out with Chase, Dylan, Nolan, and Theo as we see a woman who was attacked by her husband.

When we get there, the shit we see was brutal. The woman was barely recognizable as a person and their twin children were missing. She is certain the husband took them, and all signs were pointing to that conclusion.

When it comes to this, we prefer the hands-on approach and don’t let anyone else handle it.

We are good at what we do.

We spend the night looking for the man and children.

When we find them, they are in a broken-down abandoned house which needed to be condemned.

The man escaped before we could get to him.

We know the children are safe right now and that’s what matters.
