They were crying and terrified, though I didn’t expect anything less. They weren’t harmed though, thank goodness.

We had gotten the kids taken care of while the mother was in the hospital fighting for her life. We then headed back to the office to fill out paperwork.

The sun was coming up, but I needed to get this shit done while everything was fresh in my mind.

I don’t know how much time passed before my eyes wouldn’t stay open anymore.

When I wake up, it is to my assistant Greg calling my name.

I look up, but I can barely see him as a paper is stuck to my face. I remove it and clear my dry throat. He’s holding coffee and breakfast.

“Late night?” he asks with concern in his voice.

I nod my head. “Very late. What time is it?” I ask groggily.

“It’s after nine. I came in early and had seen you sleeping, so I figured I would run out to get you some coffee and breakfast before you started your day,” he says before placing the items on my desk.

“Thank you,” I reply before eagerly taking a swig of the coffee. It’s hot, but so fucking good.

“Were you here all night?” he asks.

I nod my head. “Yeah, had shit to do.”

He nods his head but doesn’t say anything as he leaves to head out to his desk.

I pull out my phone to call Aubrey. There were a few unread messages, and missed phone call notifications, on my lock screen. I must have not heard my phone. I realise now that I had forgotten to turn my phone off of silent once we had gotten back from searching for the man.

Aubrey: Are you going to be home tonight?

Aubrey: I hope you are okay. I saved supper for you in the fridge for when you get home.

Aubrey: I’m worried about you. Please let me know you are okay.

Aubrey: Just heard from my brother Chase. He informed me you were safe and at the office doing paperwork.

There is nothing else following the last message which was sent at midnight.

I feel like an ass that I didn’t tell her that I wasn’t going to be home. I had planned to go home to get a couple hours of sleep, but my body must have just given out at some point. I did get a couple hours in the end, but sleeping at my desk isn’t exactly comfortable.

I call her and she picks up with a quiet tone.

“Hi” she says so quietly that I can barely hear her.

“I’m sorry, baby. After the job, I had to do the paperwork while everything was fresh in my mind, and I fell asleep at my desk,” I tell her.

“As long as you are okay, and I know that you are safe,” she says, but her tone is off. I don’t know if she’s upset or pissed that I didn’t come home, but I don’t have the time to think about it as I open my email and see all the work I have to do, and then Greg comes in and tells me my morning meeting is here.

“Sounds like you’re busy. Let me know if you aren’t coming home again,” she says before hanging up.

I curse but I can’t think about it right now as I head to the washroom attached to my office and clean up, so that I look somewhat presentable.

After all, I have a company to run.

Chapter Thirteen

Aubrey

I hang up on Gabe, feeling down. Every day that goes by, I just wonder how this could all work.
