“This is ridiculous. We didn’t do it,” Stella says.

“Do what?” Theo asks, sounding cold and stepping closer.

“Fuck,” Stella hisses after realising her mistake.

“Not another word,” Kalen snaps at her.

“Oh, so you don’t want to talk? We have ways of making you talk,” I say in a deadly calm voice.

Just when Stella opens her mouth, there’s a commotion in the hallway. We turn our heads to check it out as the door is thrown open. A bunch of college guys walk in carrying a shit load of alcohol.

The distraction is just what they need because when we turn back, they have fled.

I look to the balcony window and see them jumping down from the side. It looks like they may have hurt themselves, but Nolan runs out and chases them. Once I know what direction they are all headed, Theo and I head out the door to follow.

When we catch up to Nolan, he’s breathing hard. “Lost them in the crowd,” he says, gesturing around.

They ran into the packed streets filled with people.

“Fuck, we will find them,” I hiss out.

“Let’s go,” Theo says, sounding angry.

We look for a few more hours before I start getting anxious to get back to Aubrey.

“They are a part of it,” I mutter.

“Definitely,” Theo says, nodding in agreement.

I rush back to the hospital to see Aubrey still asleep. I look at her parents in question.

“She still hasn’t woken, but they said that was normal,” her mom tells me.

“You guys can go and get some rest. I’m staying,” I tell them before taking a seat on the opposite side of the bed and grabbing Aubrey’s hand.

I block them out as they say their good-byes. I only lift my head once I hear the door close.

I look over at my woman and feel the same fears I felt yesterday.

I really thought I was going to lose her. I know I wouldn’t recover from something like that.

She’s my everything, even if I haven’t been the very best at showing her.

I make a promise to myself, and to her, that I will make sure she never questions it.

“I’m so sorry, baby. You have to wake up. I don’t know what I would have done if you didn’t make it out of that house. I thought I knew what fear was until I heard that you were inside the building that was on fire. I thought my heart stopped when I saw your limp body. You can’t leave me,” I say, not taking my eyes off of her. Tears fall from my eyes, but I don’t wipe them away.

“Maybe it’s weak of me to admit how much you affect me, but you have all of me, baby. I swear I will make sure you never question how I feel for you. I will do better. If I wasn’t working, then you would probably have been with me. Maybe this could have been avoided,” I rasp.

I drop my head on the bed and let the sobs take over my body. A bunch of what-ifs are going through my head.

A moan comes from Aubrey. I look up with wide eyes to see her blinking. Her eyes open slightly.

“Baby?” I rasp.

She gives me a questioning look. “You were in a fire. The tube is helping you breathe,” I say. I put my hand on her arm when she looks slightly panicked.

“Let me call the doctor,” I say, and place a soft kiss on her hand.
