Her head jerks back like I doused her with water. “Me?”

“Yeah, you. Do you see anyone else around?” I sway to the side as I swing my arms around.

“You’re acting weird. Are you sure you’re okay?”

“Weird? How so?”

She opens her mouth just as a loud group of people come from the stairway and burst into the hallway. She waves me inside and closes the door behind me.

Everleigh walks over to the couch and sits, pulling a large fluffy blanket over her lap. “We barely speak two words to each other most of the time and now randomly you ask me to be your date to a party, not to mention you’re drunk and you woke me up. Why don’t you ask one of the million other girls I always see you with?”

Her words drip with attitude. Jealous, much?

A slow grin spreads across my face. She squirms in her seat and I love watching the effect I have on her. She’ll sit here and deny it all day long but she’s a girl with needs just like every other girl. And when they see a good looking guy who can fulfill said needs, you think they’ll turn away? Nope.

“I don’t want to ask them. I want to take you.”

“What’s the fucking catch?”

“No catch. Senior year in my fraternity is important. We’re the role models to the lower classmen that’ll take our place when we graduate. This event is important, and it’s formal dress only. I want to make an impression.”

Everleigh snorts and a smile ghosts across her lips, disappearing as quickly as it came. But it’s the first one I’ve seen since she opened the door earlier, so I think that counts for something. “And you think you can make an impression with me as your date?”

“You’re a nice girl, Ev. One you can take home to your parents and all that.”

“I don’t know if I should take that as a compliment or not.”

“You know you’d love to be my date.”

Her face darkens and she rolls her eyes. “Pssh, whatever. You love thinking you’re such hot shit, don’t you?”

“I don’t think it. I know it.” I wink again and she rolls her eyes so hard, her head falls back against the couch pillow. I can’t help but laugh. “You know it’s true.”

“The answer is no, Landon. And now if you’ll excuse me, I’d like to go back to bed.”

“No? What? C’mon, Ev.”

“Why would I want to go to some stupid frat event with a guy who barely talks to me?”

“For a fun night, that’s why.”

“I don’t need you to have fun.”

“I know you don’t. But I promise you’ll have fun with me.”

She doesn’t respond with words, because she doesn’t need to. The look on her face tells me all I need to know. Time to sweeten the deal a bit.

“Look, I know it’s a lot to ask considering it's a formal event, so I’ll buy your dress. Whatever the cost.”

Now her eyes light up. “Whatever the cost?”

“Yep.” I know chicks can’t resist a free shopping trip.

“I’ll need shoes, too. A matching purse, maybe some earrings…” Everleigh says.

“You got it. I’ll even throw in a spa day. Get your hair or nails done, whatever it is you chicks do.” Shit, this is gonna cost me but I could care less. I want to win. If this gets her to say yes, then so be it.

“Alright, deal.”
