“Your makeup is fire.”

“You can thank Lennox for that. She’s really good at it. Wait until you see hers.”

“I can’t wait to see everyone. You ready to go? I thought we could take a ride down to a nice beach spot I know.”

Ev nods as she closes the door behind her. “Okay.”

The walk to the car is silent and I curse myself for fucking shit up. “You know we make the best Jack and Sally.” I say in hopes of lightening the mood. “We’ll be the best dressed there.”

“I think Lennox and Holden might have us beat.”

“I didn’t see Holden before I left. What are they being again?”

“Emily and Victor from Corpse Bride.”

“Ah. Another good movie.”

“You think so?” Ev sounds surprised.

“Yep. Halloween movies are top tier. Animated are even better.”

Ev laughs as I open the car door for her. “That’s right, you love cartoons.”

“Lennox tells you too much.”

“Wasn’t Lennox this time. It was Holden.”

“My next guess.” I close her door and walk around to my side. Sliding behind the wheel, I slip my mask off all the way and put it in the backseat. “SpongeBob’s the shit and no one can or will convince me otherwise.”

“You’re like a kid in an man’s body.”

“Facts.” I grin. it feels good to have some of our banter back. “Your choice of music tonight, Sally.”

She turns the station to an alternative rock one and I sneak a look at her from the side.

“Not in the mood for country?”

“Nah, not really.” She tries to hide her grin by looking out the window but I catch it.

After about ten minutes, I pull into the lot and park in a space looking out to sea. The view is open and clear and you’re able to see the shoreline for miles. The best part is all of the stars in the sky.

“What a view.” Ev says as she unbuckles and inches forward.

“One of my favorites.”

We grow quiet for a bit but this time it’s not awkward. It’s a comfortable quiet, the only sound being the waves crashing in the distance.

“Aren’t the stars gorgeous?”

She looks over at me and smiles. “They are. I don’t appreciate them enough.”

“Well now you can.”

She exhales loudly before taking a deep breath. “Landon, listen, the reason I wanted to talk is because what happened the other night can’t happen again. I know we were drunk and caught up in the moment, but that’s how feelings develop and I’m not one of those girls that can hook up and forget it—”

“I know Ev.” I interrupt her because I know. I expected this conversation and I’m glad it didn’t go the other way. “You don’t have to explain yourself. It was a mistake and I’m sorry. Your first time should be—”

Now she interrupts me. “Don’t worry about any of that. Let’s just be friends, or frenemies if you will, and use each other for dates like we’ve agreed on.”
