He set the box on the counter, lifted the lid, inhaled, and moaned. She laughed when his stomach growled.

“I didn’t know how hungry I was until I smelled this.” He lifted a slice out, took a bite, and groaned.

“Good, right?” Addison reached for a slice, but Cody slapped her hand. “Hey! I thought this one was mine. Where’s yours?”

“Funny.” She pushed her hip against him to make him move.

He grinned. “Okay, I’ll share.”

“That’s so sweet of you. Like I’d give you a choice,” she said, laughing.

“I like you, Addison Weaver.” He stared at her and tilted his head. “Does anyone call you Addie?”

“My nana. She always has.”

“Nana’s do that. Let’s sit in the living room while we eat and get to know each other.”

“Sounds good.”

Cody picked up the box, carried it to the living room, and set it on the coffee table, then he waited for her to sit before he did.

“You have manners.”

“You sound surprised.” He raised an eyebrow.

“Not really. Most cowboys do. Other men, not so much.” She shrugged.

“Well, our parents raised me and Vivian right.”

“I can see that. I think Vivian is one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met.”

“I agree, but she is my sister.” He smiled.

“You’re close, aren’t you?”

“Yes. We always have been. She was married before to a man who let her down. He didn’t stand by her when she went through a rough patch. I wanted to track him down and beat the hell out of him, but she wouldn’t let me.”

“She seems very happy now.”

“She is. Gray is a good man, and he loves her. I can’t ask for more than that for her.”

“Why haven’t you married?”

Cody sighed. “I was engaged for a while, but it didn’t work out. We broke up and started seeing other people. I thought I’d found another woman, but she didn’t like all the traveling I did for competitions. She couldn’t go with me since she worked, and it took a toll on our relationship, so we broke up. About a year later, I ran into Gwyn again, at a bull riding event, and we ended up in bed. That was a big mistake. Vivian doesn’t like her at all.” He shrugged. “I thought I was in love, but we broke up again. It’s over for good this time.”

“Are you sure?”

“Oh, yeah. We fought over everything. Especially when I wanted her to sign a prenup. I wasn’t losing my ranch if we got divorced.”

“So, she left over that? What does that tell you?”

“Yeah, I know. Vivian said the same thing. Gwyn was only interested in my money.”

“Some women are like that. No matter how much they have, it’s not enough. Money doesn’t buy happiness.”

“She seemed to think it would. I’m glad it’s over, and I honestly hope I never see or hear from her again.”

“I hope not, for your sake.”
