“How did he find out about it?”

Addison let out a deep breath and turned to face her friend.

“Cody went to the sheriff’s office and asked for advice,” she explained. “Nevada told him there wasn’t much they could do if they didn’t do anything.”

“I understand that, but I don’t trust either of them. Especially him, for some reason. And you owe Cody an apology.”

“Oh God, I know. I feel terrible for how I acted. He probably never wants to see me again. I told him I wanted to go with him to talk to Sam or a deputy, but I guess since we argued, he didn’t want to include me. After Saturday, who could blame him?”

“I doubt that. He likes you, Addison. And I’m sure he’s not happy with her being around. She sounds like someone who thinks she can get anything she wants, and right now it’s him.”

“Well, she had him before and messed things up. He’s mine now.”

“That’s great to hear. You deserve to be happy, and I can tell you are with him.”

“I am. Kinley, I’m falling for him.”

“Girl, you’re already in love with him. And he’s falling for you too. Just give him a call; I’m sure he misses you.”

“Then why hasn’t he called me?”

“Because you were the one who left, not him.”

“You’re right. I’ll call him tonight.”

“Good.”

They went back to work, and the day passed by quickly. Before long, it was time to go home. Addison locked up and walked toward her car, scanning her surroundings carefully but not seeing the man or Gwyn anywhere. With a heavy heart, she got into her SUV and drove home. All she wanted was a hot bath to relax and then she would call Cody and apologize.

Cody parked his vehicle in front of the Clifton Bed and Breakfast and noticed people sitting in rocking chairs on the porch of the large colonial house. He got out of his truck and walked up the steps, entering the foyer. A red-haired woman greeted him behind a counter.

“Welcome to the Clifton Bed and Breakfast. How can I assist you?” she asked with a smile.

“Hi, I was wondering if a guest by the name of Gwyn Harlow is staying here,” Cody replied.

“‘I’m sorry, I can’t disclose that information,” the woman responded with a smile.

“I figured as much, but I had to ask.” Cody grinned.

The woman tilted her head. “Do I know you? You look familiar.”

“Do you know Gray and Vivian Beckett?” She nodded. “I’m Vivian’s brother, Cody Haines.”

“That’s right. I remember meeting you at their wedding and reception. I’m Becca Stone,” she introduced herself and shook his hand.

“Jake’s wife, right? Now I remember,” Cody said.

“Are you visiting them?”

“No ma’am, I actually just bought a house in Clifton.”

“That’s wonderful! Welcome to the friendliest town in the west.” Becca laughed.

“Now, that is the truth. Thank you for your time, Mrs. Stone. I won’t take up any more of it.”

“Please, call me Becca. And don’t worry about it, I just wish I could have helped you,” she replied.
