“Fix what?” she asked.

“Fix Lucia.”

Lucia mouthed, There’s no fixing me, and flipped her off, but Kru was right. She needed to help. Lucia was Crew.

Cadence unbuckled and scrambled into the back. Kru, of course, chose that moment to jerk the wheel back and forth, and she fell into Lucia.

As soon as she was settled in the seat next to Lucia, she shoved Kru hard in the shoulder, but he was laughing and remorseless.

Cadence reached for her purse in the front seat and unzipped it, then took out an extra hairband and a pair of bobby pins.

“Don’t touch me,” Lucia growled.

“Or what?” Cadence asked. “You gonna fight me? Good. I could use a good fight. Means you have to actually Change though.”

“I hate you,” Lucia growled.

“Yeah, well, sometimes I hate me too. Take that off.”

“Take what off?”

“Every layer you don’t need, starting with that humongous coat.”

“I like being invisible.”

“Not tonight, sugar tits. Invisibility isn’t for speed-dating. You have a couple of minutes with each potential suitor—”

“Potential suitor? You sound like a hundred-year-old grandma.”

“Take the damn jacket off!”

Lucia grumpily jerked this way and that, shrugging out of her coat. Underneath, she was wearing a thick black cardigan.

“Take that off too.”

“I’ll get cold.”

“You’re the daughter of Beaston and Aviana. Toughen up, buttercup.”

With a put-upon sigh, Lucia pulled off her cardigan. Underneath, she wore a thick, black wool sweater.

“Seriously?” Cadence asked.

With an eye roll, Lucia peeled that over her head to reveal the skintight black Harley Davidson T-shirt under it. The neck was a deep V and showed off the top of some very-perky little cleavage.

“Now we’re getting somewhere.” She handed her a tube of lipstick and told her, “Look up so I can do your hair.”

“I told you I hate this color of lipstick,” Lucia told her.

“Well, did you bring any?”

“Yes.”

“Quit wasting my efforts then! Let me see all the makeup you brought!”

Lucia was slow as molasses as she unzipped her purse and began digging through it. Cadence lost her patience and grabbed it from her, dug through and found eyeliner, a softer shade of pink lip gloss, and a tube of mascara. “Kru, at the turnoff can you give us a second to fix her face?”

“Yep.” Kru eased to a stop where he needed to take a left onto the main road to town.
