“No point in wasting the gas.”

“But what if you meet the love of your life tonight and want to take her home without me cockblocking you?”

He shrugged. “If I fall in love tonight, that lady will probably have her own ride.”

“Oh. True.”

“Did you just tell Lucia Novak to eat a fart?” he asked, dusting off the seat of his pants.

“Maybe. Do you want me to drive? We can take my car and I can be your designated driver in case you want to party—”

“Cadence, get in the truck.”

The demand in his voice was so sexy, but she was an independent woman. “Don’t tell me what to do.”

A slow, wicked smile took his face and he stepped slowly toward her. “Get. In. My. Truck.”

The sultry, sexy tone of his voice made her want to do everything he said. She resisted the urge to high-knee it to his truck, but just barely. “Fine. But only because I want to, not because you told me to.”

He led her to the passenger’s side of his truck and pulled open the door, waited for her to get in.

Tonight he was wearing none other than the exact outfit she’d suggested he wear yesterday. What she hadn’t told him was it was the sexiest outfit she thought a man could wear. White T-shirt, dark-wash jeans that rode low on muscular hips, scuffed-up work boots and cologne. She could smell the addictive scent of it from here.

He’d trimmed up his short beard, and put some product in his hair that kept it all mussed perfectly on top like some model on a billboard.

Kru was so freakin’ hot.

“Hurry up,” Lucia yelled as she slid into the back seat of his truck.

Cadence scrunched up her face, marched to the passenger’s side, and scrambled in. “What do you think you’re doing?” she asked Lucia.

From the back seat, Lucia said in a bland voice, “I’m going speed-dating too.”

Cadence was shocked into silence as Kru got in on the driver’s side. “You aren’t dressed for speed-dating.”

“How do you know?” Lucia asked. “Are you a professional speed-dater?”

“You are completely covered up, and your hair is in your face. You look like a serial killer.”

Kru snorted, but then covered it with a cough.

“Who’s judging who now?” Lucia demanded.

“Look, if you’re going to go with us, you aren’t going to ruin the night for us. You can’t be scaring everyone off.”

Lucia growled and made the air in the truck heavy. “I’m not going to scare anyone.”

“You’re dressed like you are going to a funeral and you’re growling like a grizzly, and I haven’t seen you smile in a decade.”

“You barely hang around me, so how would you see me smile?”

Cadence yelped as Kru spun his tires and jerked them around. She struggled into her seat belt and turned around again. “Fine, smile now.”

Lucia pulled her lips back over her teeth. The emotionless snarl paired with her glowing green eyes peeking out from under her black hair looked borderline demonic. “Okay, stop smiling. You’re going to give me nightmares.”

“You know what, forget this. I was coming as a favor to you assholes.” She shoved the door open as they were speeding down the mountain.

Kru was the one who stopped her. “Shut the door! You’re going. Cadence, fix it.”
