Kru snorted from where he was filling out his paperwork, and Cadence coughed to hide her laugh from the woman who seemed very not-impressed with her jokes.

To the woman’s credit though, she did give Cadence the number sixty-nine. Great. Now every guy she speed-dated would ask her if she was into kinky stuff.

Which…maybe she was and maybe she wasn’t. She didn’t know. She hadn’t slept with anyone in awhile. Kru would probably be fun in the sack if he could just keep—

“What are you thinking about?” Kru asked from right beside her face.

Cadence yelped out, “Nothing!”

“Mmmm,” he murmured deeply, his eyes narrowed like he was a freaking mind reader now.

She felt someone staring at them. When she looked up, Lucia was standing there with her arms crossed over her chest. “Gross.”

“What? I’m not gross.”

“Your flirting is gross.”

“We are not flirting!” Cadence argued. Why did her tone sound like a freaking lie right now?

“To your tables!” the announcer with a megaphone called out.

Flustered, Cadence followed Lucia, but all the tables filled up around her, and Cadence got stuck in this dance of trying to find an empty spot while other women kept taking chairs. She finally slid into an empty chair all the way across the room from Kru, and for the life of her, she couldn’t figure out why her chest felt so tight at that.

The man across the table was handsome and about her age, and his smile was nice, but Cadence found herself looking around him to see the woman Kru had been paired up with.

“So, the number sixty-nine, huh?” he asked conversationally as he pointed to the paper with the printed number she’d slapped down onto the table. “It’ll be easy to remember.”

Kru’s first partner was very pretty. Her hair was shiny and her smile looked like she’d definitely had money for braces when she was a kid.

“Hello?” the guy asked.

“Oh. Hi.” Cadence forced a smile, but he looked unsettled.

Relax your face, crazy-pants. Cadence forced herself to stop grimacing and gave him a good effort at a smile. “I’m Cadence, nice to meet you.”

“I’m Hank.” He arched his blond eyebrows and lowered his voice. “Rhymes with spank.”

Cadence looked at the announcer with a prayer in her heart that five minutes was already up. It wasn’t. She still had another four minutes and thirty-nine seconds of torturous conversation with Spanky Hanky. When the announcer finally called for the men to move to their next tables, Hank told her, “I’ll definitely remember you and your number for the end of the night.”

Cadence forced a smile and turned her number around. “I’m number ninety-six.”

Hank frowned down at her. “Even upside down, it still says sixty-nine.”

“Shit,” she muttered, looking at the paper. Sure enough, yep, sixty-nine either way.

“Well, it was kind of nice to meet you,” Hank told her.

“Byyyyye,” she said with a little wave as the next guy sat in front of her.

She glared at the new girl Kru sat across from. A blonde. And natural blonde, if her eyebrows were anything to go by. Her tits looked extra perky in that top. Fake tits? Did guys care if tits were fake or real? Did Kru care? She looked over at Kru, who was twisted around in his chair staring right at her with this caught-ya smirk on his face. Crap!

“Hiiii,” she said sweetly to the dark-haired gentleman in front of her.

A server with a notepad walked by as he began to introduce himself, and she tried to wave her down, but the server didn’t see her.

“Wanting a drink?” the man asked.

“I’m a little nervous.” It wasn’t a lie.
