“Dude, you run. You’re human. You’ll definitely die. I’m going to get Gunner fired.”

“Kong won’t fire him, dumbnuts!” the man screamed from farther away.

“It’s numbnuts!”

The war between Kru and Gunner’s animals was savage and terrifying. The enormous logs were falling all around them, and the guy holding the camera was ducking and cussing and eventually hid down behind a big pile of lumber to protect himself. He pointed the camera at his face. “Kong, can you freaking pull Gunner off our jobsite now? He’s a loose cannon.” The shaky camera aimed back up the mountain at the savage war between the animals, and then turned off.

Cadence’s mouth was hanging open wide enough to catch flies. Nothing about that was even remotely funny! Send.

I lived.

Obviously. You’re texting me! Are you okay?

Ask if Gunner is okay.

I don’t care if Gunner is okay! I care that it’s two fights two days in a row with his grizzly!

My wiener is okay. Do you want the picture now?

“Oh my gosh,” she murmured, fingers flying as she furiously typed. Is that what it’s like all the time?! Send.

No. Only 94% of the time. When do you get a lunch break?

“Cadence!” Willa called out, startling the phone right out of her hand. It landed on a crate of red wigglers with a clatter.

“Yus? Yes? Yep? How you doing? Need anything? Yes?”

Willa seemed to be biting back a smile. “I just got a call from Kong. Seems there’s been an accident on one of his jobsites.”

Cadence narrowed her eyes. “An accident, or a fight?”

“Probably a fight. He’s asked if you can take the rest of the day off.”

“For what?” She hadn’t talked to Kong in a long time. What did he want from her?

“A couple of his workers got hurt.”

Well, that perked her up. “Who?”

Willa cocked her head and shoved the eyeglasses she didn’t need farther up her nose. “You know. He’s wanting you to check on someone.”

She didn’t understand. “I just talked to him. He seems fine.”

“Gunner damn-near bled out, and the cat broke something but he won’t let anyone around him.”

“Oh my gosh,” she whispered in horror. “I don’t understand. He’s texting me like everything is fine.”

“That’s men, honey. Is he asking you to come home?”

“He’s wanting me to take a lunch break.”

Willa inhaled deeply and gave her a patient look. “A dominant male won’t ask for help from someone he doesn’t trust to keep him safe if he’s unconscious. If he asks Kong for help, he runs the risk of another dominant male going on the attack without being able to help himself. Go home, Cadence. Kong’s asking you to fix it. An entire yarder fell on them, and Kru pulled Gunner out from under it. He took the hit.”

Fury boiled in her blood. Fucking Kru! He’d been talking to her like the fight was no big deal. “I have to go,” she said, grabbing her phone. She sprinted out of the warehouse, texting Kru as she went. I’m coming. Where are you? Send.

A picture of her couch came through as his response.

“Shhhhit,” she murmured. It was a twenty-minute drive from here.
