“Cadence!” Willa called.

“Yeah?” she called over her shoulder without slowing.

“Landon is going with you!”

“I would rather lick a toilet seat!” she retorted automatically. “No he’s not.”

“He’s already on his way!”

And sure enough, Landon’s beat-up old truck was up ahead, spinning out and spewing gravel as he floored it down the mountain road.

“Why?” she yelled at Willa.

“That boy is one of the sons of the Cursed Bear. He’s part Gray Back and part Boarlander. All we do is fight and fix each other up. He can help.”

Whatever. Cadence hopped up in her rig, turned the engine over, and jammed her foot on the gas before her Bluetooth had even connected to her phone. As soon as she could, she connected a call to Kru, but he didn’t pick up. She called again. “Come on, pick up.”

No answer.

“Shit!” she screamed, slamming her hand on the steering wheel.

She connected a call to Lucas. She didn’t know why, other than he was Alpha.

“Hey,” he answered.

“Kru needs help, where are you?”

“At Moosey’s. Where is he?”

“At my house.”

Cadence could hear his truck start over the phone, and the acceleration. “I’ll be there as soon as I can.” Click.

Good on Lucas. He hadn’t even seemed put out, or asked what stupid thing Kru had done now. He was just trying to get to him, same as her.

She called Kru again. No answer. Next was a call to Jenna.

“Hello?” her friend answered.

“Where are you?”

“Work. Why, what’s up?”

“Kru needs help.”

“Oh my gosh! What happened?” she blurted out.

“Fight with Gunner.”

“Who have you called?”

“Lucas and you. I’m heading to him now, but he’s at the trailer park!”

A call came through, and Lucia’s name popped up on the screen. “Jenna, I have to go, Lucia is calling.”

“Okay! I’m heading there now!” Jenna said, and then hung up.

Cadence connected the call to Lucia.
