When I finally got behind the counter, Joanie was there, helping Jacob with a frown on her face. He looked as miserable as she did. I put on my apron and took note of all the customers before tapping Joanie out.

“I’m sorry about that, Joanie. You can go on back to your office now. I’ve got this.”

She turned her back to Jacob and stared at the pie case with tears filling her eyes. “He makes me so angry, Violet. I can’t go back there with him.”

I inched closer and inconspicuously slipped her a napkin. “Say the word and I’ll take a frying pan to his head.”

She laughed even as tears streaked down her cheeks. “If I thought it would help, I’d do it myself. He’s bringing in two of his investor buddies, Violet. He wants to try and make this place something it’s not.”

“Don’t let him. This place is yours, Joanie. Fight him.” I hugged her tight, surprising her. “Fight him and I’ll help. We’ll all help.”

She took a slow, deep breath and nodded. “You’re right. Okay. I’ll do it.”

“Just not tonight, because I invited my parents to have dinner with the three men I’m sleeping with.” I ran my hands through my hair and laughed like I had a plan and wasn’t freaking out. “But tomorrow? Tomorrow, I’ll get my frying pan and I’ll do whatever you need.”

“Oh, god. Just worry about yourself for now. I need to think of a plan first. Something it sounds like you didn’t do.” She lifted her chin and turned her gaze towards her office. “Someone’s sitting in my chair and I’ve got to kick them out of it so I can start planning.”

I watched as she went marching off and almost felt sorry for Chase. He was about to get his ass handed to him. Before I could watch him tuck tail and run, though, Jacob coughed to get my attention and nudged his empty mug towards me.

“Can I get a refill or will your boyfriends threaten me over that, too?”

I shrugged and glanced over his shoulder. “I don’t know, but we could ask them.”

He swung his gaze around, but there was no one there. Looking back at me, he wagged his finger. “Why do I still like you?”

“I can’t answer that, either.”

CHAPTER 32

Violet

Thick arms wrapped around my waist from behind and Ben pressed a kiss to my neck. “Everything looks delicious, Vi. Consider me thoroughly impressed.”

I leaned into his warmth and looked out the window over the sink to see Forrest playing with my parents in the yard. The dogs were with them and they all seemed to be having the time of their lives. “Thanks for letting me use the kitchen. And the dining room. And thanks for agreeing to have this dinner in the first place.”

“Stop thanking me.” He kissed along my neck to my shoulder. “Your parents said they’re going to keep Forrest tonight.”

My body flushed and I pressed my hips into him shamelessly. “I’ve missed you guys.”

He slid his hand over my stomach and cupped my sex through my leggings. “We’ve missed you. Spread your legs for me, Vi.”

I gripped the counter and did as he said, even as I told him it wasn’t a good idea. “They’re right out there, Ben. I don’t want to get caught.”

He pushed his hand into my leggings and panties. “We won’t. I just want to help you relax.”

I gasped as his rough fingers settled over my clit. “Ben…”

Making tight circles over the sensitive nub, he growled against my neck and pressed his hard length against my ass. When I slapped my hands over his arms and held onto him, he stroked me faster. “That’s it, Vi. Come for me. This is an easy one. Later, I won’t stop until you’re begging.”

I ducked my head and held my breath as I came. It wasn’t one of the crazy orgasms they normally gave me, but it was still better than I ever did for myself. It was exactly what I needed.

Ben pulled his hand free and kissed the side of my head. “I can’t wait to fuck you tonight.”

I turned into his chest and smiled up at him. I felt much more relaxed and when I stretched taller to kiss him, I also felt happier. They hadn’t come into the diner that day and I really had missed them. Running my hands through Ben’s hair, I couldn’t stop myself from saying the things on my mind. “It’s pitiful I missed you guys today, isn’t it?”

He shook his head. “No. I missed you.”

“Was everything okay with work? You guys raced out of here and then never said anything about it.” I watched as a part of his smile faded. “I’m sorry. I guess I shouldn’t ask about it.”
