He gripped my chin and tilted my face up to his. “You ask anything you want, Violet. Some things we won’t be able to tell you, but it’s dependent on the client. This morning was a government thing, so I can’t tell you about it, but it should be okay.”
I nodded like I understood. “Okay. As long as you guys are good, that’s what matters.”
“We’re good. And everything you put together here looks good. I’m glad your parents decided to play nice.”
I looked over my shoulder at them. “Me too. They seemed sincere. I hope it’s real.”
“They’d be crazy not to want to have a relationship with you, Vi. You’re amazing.” He nodded at the sight of them heading inside. “I’d better get rid of my erection. I don’t think my second chance with them will go so well if I don’t.”
Laughing, I reached down and cupped him through his jeans. “Be nice to him. And tell him I’ll see him later.”
Ben groaned and disappeared just as my parents came in with Forrest. The dogs followed and General came right up to and took an extra wet lick along my chest.
Forrest laughed. “Mom! You got slimed!”
Mason and Justin walked in, their eyes on my slobber covered chest. Mason shook his head. “General strikes again.”
I heard my parents and the guys talking while I hurried to the hallway bathroom to wash my chest and hands. When I got back, Forrest was regaling everyone with a story about his school day. Mason and Justin were leaning on the counter next to the sink and my parents were sitting on the other side of the island, their eyes going between the men and Forrest.
I walked over to sandwich myself between the guys and smiled when they both moved closer to me. Glancing up at each of them, I felt my heart flutter.
Mason leaned in closer with a crooked smile stretching his lips. “What’s that sweet look on your face about?”
I rested my hand on his stomach and shrugged. “Don’t know.”
He leaned in and kissed the tip of my nose. “Little liar.”
Forrest came over and wrapped his arms around me. “Mom! Did you hear what I said? Bella is my girlfriend.”
I completely forgot to play it cool. “What?! Girlfriend? My baby is too young to have a girlfriend! Oh, Forrest. You can’t grow up on me.”
He groaned when I hugged him tight and then wiggled away from me. “Mom! I’m not too young! I’m six!”
Real tears filled my eyes but I didn’t want to seem like I was losing it, so I tried to laugh. “Oh, okay. Six is the new dating age? That’s fine. That’s totally cool.”
Ben walked into the room and took one look at me. “Well, shit. What happened?”
My mother sounded like she was fighting to hold in a laugh. “Violet is watching her baby grow up and she’s melting down over it.”
Forrest groaned. “I’m not a baby.”
Justin pulled me into his chest to support me and held me close. “Forrest, buddy, why don’t we pretend like you’re too young to date for a little while longer? For your mom.”
Dad rolled his eyes and looked around the kitchen. “Please tell me someone has a beer for me.”
Mason nodded. “I’ll get a beer for everyone who isn’t pretending to still be too young to date. I think we could all use one to take the edge off.”
“She’s crying over Forrest dating. When she was six, she cut off all her hair and glued it to our living room walls. She used to love scaring us, too. She would hide every chance she got and jump out when we were focused on something else. We’ll probably both die ten years earlier than we should’ve because of her. But Forrest is dating and she can’t handle that.” Mom saw my shocked expression and laughed. “Sorry.”
I put my hands on my hips and scoffed. “What the hell, Mom?”
Forrest looked between us and a sneaky smile slowly stretched across his face. “You liked scaring people? That sounds fun…”
CHAPTER 33
Violet
The table grew silent as everyone dug into their dinner. Mom and Dad sat across from Ben and Mason, I sat across from Forrest, and Mason sat at the head of the table. As someone’s fork scraped across their plate, I glanced up and saw Mom studying Mason. My stomach clenched with nerves as I watched her put her fork down.
