LET ME OUT!

The voice in my head bellowed as I marched down the road, and it took all of the strength within me to shove it back down into the pit of my darkened soul. I had never shifted as a child or a teenager. After Mom snatched me away from this place, she taught me how to stuff it down. How to ignore it. How to control it. Because in her mind, being human was more important than being a shifter. But being surrounded by the pack? Hearing their howls? Feeling their energies colliding all at once against my body?

All it wanted was to break free.

It’s time.

“No,” I said plainly.

You can’t resist me any longer.

I charged through the front door of the house I had once lived in. “Yes, I can. And I will.”

Let me out, damn it!

“Shut up, damn it!” I exclaimed.

Man, the voice inside of my head must have been taking sass classes from Levi.

I slammed the front door behind me before a blinding pain shot through my abdomen. I gritted my teeth and sank to my knees, leaning my forehead into the stained hardwood floors beneath me. I wrapped my arms around my stomach, trying to physically hold it together. It felt like an alien was attempting to rip through my skin. It felt like something was trying to devour me whole in one swallow. Sweat permeated the nape of my neck. My organs felt as if they were on fire, even though my skin felt cold to the touch.

And as I panted for air, footsteps scrambled outside.

“Raven!” Dean exclaimed as he banged on the door. “Open up! Please!”

“Take it off its hinges, Dean,” Hudson growled.

“Raven! Can you hear us!?” Levi yelled.

I wheezed for air as nausea rolled over my entire being. “Help.”

The blowback from the door soaring open took the rest of me to the ground. I laid there with my knees curled up to my chest as all four men scurried into the house. I didn’t want to accept their help. I didn’t want to get into the habit of relying on these shifters because once I left, I’d be nothing to them once more. But as someone scooped me into their arms, I heard Levi’s voice as his mouth pressed to the shell of my ear.

“Take in deep breaths through your nose and focus on my voice.”

I whimpered as my body shivered. “I-I can’t.”

“Yes, you can, beautiful,” Dean said as Levi carried me and settled me onto the couch. “Listen to Levi and what he’s telling you. You can do this. I know you can. You’re so much stronger than you believe.”

I squeezed my eyes close. “I’m gonna puke.”

Do it. Vomit me out onto the floor.

"Her wolf is trying to force its way out,” Hudson said.

“Maybe we should just let it?” Levi asked.

“No,” Brody said. “Not like this. If her wolf forces herself out, we run the risk of the wolf taking full control over her and not allowing Raven to shift back into a human any time soon.”

Levi crouched down and wiped away the sweat filling my brow. “I need you to be strong and look at me.”

“I—I can’t,” I choked out.

He shook me softly as his hands gripped my upper arms. “Damn it, Raven, for once in your life stop doubting yourself and just do it.”

I managed to open one aching eye. “I feel like I’m… I’m dying.”

He pressed his forehead to mine. “Focus on the sound of my voice. Not the voice in your head.”
