And got my first taste of raw bear meat as I allowed Wolfy to dig in.

“OH, HELL YEAH! FRESH MEAT!”

It didn’t taste as terrible as I figured it would. In fact, it almost tasted good. I shoved it all away, though. I’d have to get used to shoving it away. I mean, I was about to return to the world of ignorant humans. I wouldn’t be able to indulge like this any longer.

And after Wolfy had pulled every hunk of meat off the bones of that bear, I flopped onto my back.

“Guys?”

I felt their presence as they emerged from the woods, coming to stand beside me. None of them were in wolf form any longer, but I didn’t care. Their shirtless forms hovered over me, gazing down at my bloodstained coat.

“Looks like the meal was good,” Hudson said with a grin.

“Don’t shift back until it digests,” Brody said, “otherwise it’ll make your human form sick.”

Dean sat down and rubbed my full belly. “What is it you needed us for?”

I looked over at Brody and reached out to him. “The pack is yours.”

“What?” Levi asked.

“You can’t be serious,” Dean said.

“Brody.”

He stared directly into my eyes. “I hear you.”

Dean shook his head. “He hasn’t found the witch yet.”

“I don’t care about any witch. I don’t care about the blood contract.”

“This isn’t what your father wanted,” Hudson growled.

“You forget that my father didn’t even want me. If he had, he would’ve come after me.”

“This won’t work,” Dean said. “Brody will just be like I was. An interim alpha. Waiting for you to return.”

Hudson snarled. “Seriously? We’re back on this immature tangent?

“Hey!” I barked as I leapt to my feet. “Remember who you’re speaking with!”

“You promised,” Levi growled.

I turned to face him. “And because I promised that, multiple are wounded. Even more are dead. Children are dead because of me, Levi.”

He shook his head. “That’s not the least bit true, and you know it.”

I ignored him and turned to Brody. “I can’t do this. The pack needs someone who can lead them the right way and keep them safe.”

My cousin nodded. “I know.”

“Then, you know it can’t be me. The bears sense something is wrong. They know someone incapable is leading this pack. We’ll be demolished if I’m alpha.”

“No!” Dean exclaimed. “I won’t accept it. I refuse to accept it.”

“Are you sure about this?” Brody asked as he held up his hand to silence everyone. “There’s nothing we can say to stop you?”

“Are you really going to fight me, too?”
