I whipped around just as a black bear tackled me to the ground. Dean’s wolf came out of nowhere, slamming directly into its stomach and hurling the bear off me. I licked the bloody ground just to give Wolfy a taste of what was coming if she just fucking listened to me. And as my pack screamed out for me in every which direction, I gave commands.

“Brody, take the southside. Hudson, move north, that’s probably where they’re coming from. Levi!”

“Yes, alpha,” he said as he came up to me.

I nuzzled softly against him before giving my command. “Go with Hudson. Shut those fuckers down at the source.”

“Done.”

“What about me?” Dean asked as he leapt into my eyesight.

I turned to face the blood already trickling down the black-paved road. “Go door to door. Those capable of fighting need to be with us. Those who are wounded need to get back to my place immediately. Tell the healers of the pack to head there and set up shop. I’ll make sure no one gets past this exit point.”

Everything happened so quickly, and just as the guys dispersed, I knew we were too late. Women wailed over their dead young in my head and men gurgled on their own blood, reaching out to me with their last wishes. I dug my claws into bears that tried to charge past me, allowing Wolfy to take hold. And the second she did, everything went black.

I completely blacked out in a deep, blood-fueled rage.

And when I surfaced, the bodies of wolves and bears alike littered the ground at my feet.

“No,” I said breathlessly.

Just as quickly as the fighting has started, it ceased to exist. The rumbling, thunderous footfalls of retreating bears wafted back up the mountain until there was nothing left except the sound of my wailing pack. Mothers blanketed their children who had been slaughtered in the middle of the streets. Wives threw themselves over their husbands that had died protecting their homes. The smell was putrid. The stench of death hung over the entire pack as my men gathered around me.

“What do you need from us?” Dean asked.

“IT’S FEEDING TIME!”

I cringed at the thought. “See that bear corpse? The brown one?”

“I do, yes.”

“YUMMY!”

I held back tears as I closed my eyes. “Drag it back to the house. I promised Wolfy she could eat.”

“YES!”

“What?” Dean asked.

“You named your wolf?” Hudson asked breathlessly as he jogged up.

I turned my back to them. “I told you what I needed. Now, do it.”

“Does she know that naming her wolf only gets in the way of her becoming one with it? Has anyone told her that yet??” Brody asked.

“Just do it!” I snapped.

The world swirled around me as they dragged the carcass out of sight down the road. I peered over my shoulder, looking out at the throng of naked shifters as they took to the streets. I watched them fall to their knees, wailing out toward the sky with their hands thrusted into the air. I watched even more of them collapse, calling out for helpers and healers as people dragged them down the road.

“Wait,” I said, reaching out to Hudson.

“Yes, alpha?” he asked.

“Take the bear carcass into the woods. The healers are at my house. Once you drop it off somewhere, come back and help get the wounded to my place so they can be taken care of.”

As I gazed out upon what my ignorance had brought the pack, I made my decision. There was no way in hell I could do this. My father would have never allowed this to happen. A capable, knowledgeable alpha would have never allowed those bears to get the jump on our home base.

So, with my newfound decision, I trotted off into the woods.
