I pulled into the driveway and hopped out of the car to make my last stop of the day before I took my ass home.

“You look particularly shitty today,” Hailo opened the door, not hesitating to call me out with a smirk. “Well, lately,” she clarified, allowing me inside.

“Thanks, Lo Diddy. I can always count on you.”

Her tone softened before asking, “Do you want to talk about it?”

“Talk about what?”

“Don’t say it’s nothing because it’s something.”

I wanted to confide in Hailo about how much I missed Skylar. The random text conversations. The smile on her face whenever I popped into Paradise’s Dream. Expressing that wouldn’t change anything, so I declined.

“Shit’s been hectic since you’ve been holding my man hostage,” I joked, using Gianni as a decoy.

“You’re a terrible liar. You love Gi, but even he can’t make you look as bad as you have the last few times you’ve stopped by,” Hailo pointed to the living room and led the way taking a seat on the couch. “What happened with Sky?”

“What makes you think it’s Sky?”

“You’re not moved by much except when it comes to her,” Hailo had the goofiest smile on her face.

“I haven’t seen her since my birthday. She said it was no point introducing her and Cam to something they couldn’t have. So, I respected her decision.”

“But you don’t agree,” Hailo rushed out, trying to find a loophole that ended with Sky and me together.

“I didn’t say that.”

“You didn’t not say it either. Who cares if she has a kid if she makes you happy?”

“Rules are rules. You know that, Lo.”

Hell, she knew better than anybody. Hailo tried to protest and ended up locked away in a basement. I couldn’t let the same happen to Sky and Cam.

“It’s only a rule because nobody has challenged it. Since children and family are so important, shouldn’t Cam have the opportunity to benefit from one too?”

“She can. It just can’t be with me.”

“What if Sky got pregnant? Then what would happen?”

“Then we’d have to get married. The same way you and Gi did.”

“There you have it,” Hailo smirked, causing me to laugh. “I’m joking, but I got you to smile.”

“I appreciate it, Lo.”

“You’re welcome. I know rules are rules,” she paused briefly, gesturing a gag as she rolled her eyes, “But I don’t think you should give up. Rules change, and maybe DuPont Falls needs to change too.”

“Lo, can you take Ren,” Gi paused, looking up at us sitting on the couch. “I didn’t know you were here. What are y’all talking about?”

“None of your business.”

“You didn’t tell him?” I whispered.

“It’s not my business to tell,” Hailo winked, patting my shoulder before walking over to Gianni, who was still confused.

“You’re just going to wink at another nigga in front of me?” Gi asked.

“Calm down, it’s just Mack,” Hailo fussed, taking the baby out of his arms before disappearing with Serenity. I followed Gi down the hallway to his office, shutting the door behind me.
