My neck buckled at her statement because the man I knew and married was emotional and impulsive. Maybe he hadn’t said anything to her, but I’m sure he confided in Mack or Gianni.

“You got quiet. Are you having second thoughts over there?” My sidelong glance of disbelief made Sky laugh and throw her hands up. “Hey, I was just asking.”

“Sure you were. Anyway, how come my invitation got lost in the mail.”

“Girl, what invitation?” Sky perched her hand under her chin, displaying her perfect face.

“I see that big ass band on your finger. It’s damn near blinding me. What’s the tea boo?”

Sky broke into a wide-open smile.

“We eloped, so don’t take it personally. Your invitation didn’t get lost.”

“Sky!” I sang, tearing up. “That is so sweet and honestly screams Mack.”

“Simple can turn into a circus real quick with this family. We just wanted that moment to ourselves and Camdyn.”

“I honestly love that. I’m so happy for you, Sky.”

“Thanks, boo. So tell me about Vincent Carmichael,” She smiled, bouncing her eyebrows.

“I don’t have anything exciting to share like eloping.”

“You left your husband and this crazy ass family. That’s exciting.”

“Only my side was crazy. Mack comes from normalcy.”

“This is true, but I want the details bitch,” Sky insisted, so I gave her the abbreviated version of my history with Vincent.

I was hesitant to share, but it felt good to have someone to talk to about my feelings and the fear of another failed relationship. Sky was the perfect person to be vulnerable with because she didn’t judge me. Her smile felt warmed and welcomed all my shit.

“Maybe the third time will be the charm,” Sky suggested.

“Really, Sky!” I exclaimed, clenching my stomach from laughing so hard.

“It was for me,” Sky shrugged. “The same can happen for you. Just not with my man. I’m nice, but I’ll kill you.”

“Too soon, hoe.”

“I’m kidding, but it’s all about perspective. If you want this one to work, make it work. Don’t do the same things that caused issues in previous relationships, and you’ll be fine.”

“Thanks, Sky. I appreciate it.”

“You’re welcome, babe. Have you spoken to Solana?”

“Not really. I ran into her last week picking up Bryson, but that’s about it.”

“You miss her, don’t you?” Sky asked.

I offered a faint smile while trying to decide. Of course, I missed Solana, but I wasn’t sure why. Was it the history we shared that created a comfortable familiarity? Or did I truly miss my friend?

“Sometimes people outgrow each other,” I hunched. “Everything isn’t meant to last forever.”

“They don’t, but sometimes people let their pride destroy relationships.”

“Alright,” I sighed and grabbed my mimosa. “Enough about me.”

Sky obliged my advances to change the subject and began filling me in on the latest with Marcus. It had been months, and he was still in a coma, and the chances of him waking up were slim to none.
