I giggled at the way Sky leaned in to ask if it was terrible that she didn’t feel sorry for him. She was indeed the most genuine spirit I had ever met. She wasn’t perfect and didn’t try to be, but I never had to question her intentions. It seemed like everybody felt the same about Sky.

After brunch, we agreed not to let so much time pass before our next outing, which I appreciated. As crazy as the Merauxs drove me, they were my community, and adjusting to life without it wasn’t easy, but I was managing.

I reached Tyson’s office and walked upstairs, where Nebula was too eager to greet me.

“Oh, hi, Kyerra.”

“Hey, is Tyson in his office?”

“Yes, right this way,” she volunteered.

“I know the way,” I replied, walking around her to Tyson’s door. Out of respect, I knocked first and waited for him to yell come in before I opened the door.

Tyson sat on the couch with his laptop to monitor Bryson, who was on the floor surrounded by toys.

“Hey.”

“Wassup?” Tyson greeted, closing his laptop and hauling to his feet.

“Mommy’s big man!” I exclaimed, scooping him into my arms. “I missed you so much!” Bryson couldn’t get a word out because he laughed out loud as I planted kisses on his cheeks.

“He was pulling at his ear yesterday, so keep an eye on it.”

“Thanks for letting me know.”

Tyson slithered out of my arms, and I let him so I could take the bookbag from Tyson.

“Welcome.”

Tyson bent down and gave Bryson a quick pep talk about being a big boy before giving his forehead a quick peck and retreating to his desk. That’s how every handoff went. There was minimal conversation, and I couldn’t tell if it was because Tyson was hurt and hated me or he didn’t care enough.

Walking out of Tyson's office, I couldn’t help but feel a bittersweet sense of closure. Despite the challenges and heartaches of my failed marriage and the complexities of co-parenting, I was proud that I finally prioritized my own happiness. It wasn't easy, and it certainly came with its sacrifices, but I chose myself for the first time in a long time. And in that choice, I discovered a newfound strength and resilience I never knew I possessed.

Chapter Thirty-One

Pacing the room, we were supposed to be on our way out the door, but I had this unwavering feeling that I was forgetting something. What that something was, I didn’t know, but I couldn’t leave home without it.

“Sol, the car is outside. We need to go.” Sky barked.

“I feel like I’m forgetting something.”

“You’re not. It’s just nerves. Now, let’s go,” Hailo said, ushering me toward the door.

“You’re already married anyway. I don’t know why you’re so nervous.”

“Of course you wouldn’t. You eloped hoe,” I sneered.

“Are you really surprised? Mack hates celebrating his birthday, and you thought he’d want a wedding.”

“He would’ve if that’s what you wanted. He’ll do anything for you.”

“And I love him enough not to put him through that,” Sky said, sticking her tongue out to emphasize her point. She and Mack were truly a match made in heaven.

“I have your dress and shoes. You’re not leaving anything. Now we have to go, ” Hailo fussed. “Chop! Chop!”

The three of us made our way out of the suite downstairs to the car so we could drive to the venue. During the ride, I stared out of the window, trying to pinpoint the source of my anxiety, when Sky grabbed my hand.

“You’re scared because letting everybody into your world comes with expectations and unwanted opinions. This makes it real but don’t be afraid of real. Be thankful.”
