Opening his hand, he stared at the scrunchie that had held her ponytail. He should give it back to her, but not tonight. He’d told her that he’d be waiting, so he’d keep it for a while. A little souvenir of what he hoped would be the first date of many.

He started the engine and had put the SUV in reverse when his cell phone buzzed with an incoming text. The caller ID made him dizzy with relief. It was from Kit.

Next Saturday. Hiking up at Anza-Borrego. Dogs + picnic lunch. Show me why you like the desert more than the ocean. Pick me up at 9am.

Closing his eyes, he reined in his galloping pulse. He could do that. The state park was the closest desert to San Diego and he and Siggy knew it well.

He could absolutely do that.

When his head stopped spinning, he typed out his reply. It’s a date.
