Page 36 of Never Tear Us Apart

While at first I couldn’t sleep—what happened with Cruz making me toss and turn for nearly an hour—eventually I did drift off, where my dreams were filled with memories of the past.

Now that I was up, I knew it was time to tell her what happened. I couldn’t keep anything from her, and it was like she once told me—get the bad stuff out and move on. But something told me I’d get it out but wouldn’t move.

I may have told myself I was over Cruz and chalked up his being in Cherry Cove this summer as an unfortunate correlation, and nothing more. But I knew it was a lie. Last night not only rattled me, but stirred up the same emotion and angst he did that first day, telling me one thing—my mind may think I was over him, but my heart knew better.

“All right,” I grumble and sit up slowly, reaching for the coffee. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” She sinks down on the bed next to me and eyes my hair as the coffee works its way down to my chest. “That’s some hair you’re sporting.”

I’m sure I look like an extra fromMad Maxbut I don’t needher to tell me that. Shooting her a dirty look, I take another sip of coffee and she laughs.

“Love you.”

“Yeah, yeah,” I roll my eyes.

“Okay, you get one more sip of coffee and then I need to know what happened last night. I’ve been dying to know ever since you fell asleep with that mean scowl on your face.”

She twists her face into what I can only assume is an imitation of me, and I can’t help but smile. “You look constipated.”

She flips me off and lets out an exasperated sigh. “Come on Elle, spill it. What happened to make you so mad last night?”

I lean back, coffee in hand, wondering where to start. “Cruz happened,” I say simply. “The asshole bully from high school found Royce and I talking in the bathroom and lost his shit.”

Her mouth falls open. “He what?”

“That’s right.” I take another sip. “Mister Calm and Collected from this morning left the building behind Elvis and that possessive dick took his place.”

“You mean the possessive side you once told me made you hot?”

“Sure,” I nod, “when that anger didn’t result in me being trapped between him and the sink.”

“Shut up!” She hits the bed. “You two…wait,” she stops herself mid thought. “Back it up. You were with Royce in the bathroom, why?”

“Talking,” I shrug and take another sip.

“Was the door open or closed?” she asks.

I pull the cup down from my mouth slowly. “Closed, why?”

“Jesus, Elle. Do you have a death wish?”

I wrap both hands around the cup and sit up a bit more. “What do you mean?”

“You were in the bathroom with another guy athisparty. What did you think would happen?”

“I didn’t think he’d kick down the door!”

She scoffs and her eyes widen. “He kicked the door in, are you serious?”

“Yes,” I reply in frustration. “Which honestly, doesn’t make any sense.”

“No?” She arches her brow. “Do you need me to explain it to you?”

“Um, I think so because I don’t know why he acted that way when he doesn’t give a shit.”

“Well,” she laughs, “clearly he does. I mean the way he looked at you when we arrived, and then the whole kicking the door in…” She shakes her head. “That’s some real caveman shit right there.”

I chew on my lower lip, thinking about Cruz’s behavior last night. One minute he was acting like I’m the last person he wants to see, and the next, we’re kissing. Our conversation had whipped back and forth like a live wire that’d been cut, and frankly, I was feeling this morning like I had a bad case of whiplash.
