“You’re high.” I set the cup down on my nightstand and push up from the bed. “He didn’t look at me like that.”

“I am not.” She laughs and gets up from the bed as well. “And…judging by the way you’re gnawing on that lower lip right now, I think more happened between you two, than you’re telling me.”

She’s right, something did happen. For a moment it was like the past two years didn’t exist and it was just he and I—our connection as strong as ever. But then that goddamn song came on, reminding me that the past few yearsdidhappen.

No matter what booze-fueled moment we may have been sharing, it was just that—a moment. Nothing more.

“We kissed,” I admit, and when I say it, Jenica’s eyes bug out.“And then he called me a whore.”

She crosses her arms, eyes going from wide to narrow like some wild animal. “Hewhat?”

“He apologized, but needless to say, I won’t be kissing him again.”

“Oh, well, he apologized so we should let it slide, right?” She pauses for a second, then throws her hands in the air. “Um, no, Elle. No fucking way. He does not get to call you a whore when you were the mostnon-whore at that party.”

“I know that.” I tuck my hair behind one ear. “But as for what he or anyone else thinks, I really don’t care. Last night wasn’t about him. It was about getting one step closer to finding out what was going on with my father’s case, and Cruz fucked it up.”

Jenica’s anger lifts a bit and she smiles. “God, I love it when you swear. It’s like watching the Queen of England light up a joint.”

“She’d never do that,” I laugh.

“Well yeah, everyone knows the best pot is here.”

I shake my head and laugh. Leave it to Jenica. The girl can always make me smile.

“In all seriousness.” I clear my throat. “I was so close to getting something from Royce and then Cruz came in with his whole, ‘who are you talking to, get out’ bullshit. I swear it was like I was sixteen again.”

“Except you weren’t, because if you were, you two would have wound up boning in the bathroom.”

Now she’s not entirely wrong there. When Cruz and I were together, we did have sex in the bathroom a lot. But mostly because we were doing that little dance of acting like we hated each other during the day, which sent the sexual tension between us spilling over into the night when we were alone.

“Well,” I draw in a breath and let it out slowly, “we didn’t do anything more than kiss because it stopped and then he saidwhat he did.”

“Why did he say it?” she questions.

I make my way over to the window and look down to the beach. It’s not even ten yet and already it’s packed.

“He had it in his head that I wanted Royce, and I kept telling him I wasn’t talking to him because I wanted him, but he didn’t care. He more or less said I should do the entire football team.”

“You’d never do that,” Jenica straightens. “Revenge sex isn’t your thing.”

“Well, maybe it should be.”

“Well, all right Miss Thing,” she says with approval, her voice lifting an octave. “Just, do me a favor, and don’t do it with Royce, okay?”

I turn from the window and scrunch my face. “I would never. He’s not my type.”

“Good.” She pauses for a moment and eyes me carefully. “For real though, are you okay? That had to have stung what Cruz said.”

“It did,” I admit. “But I’m over it. Moving on, right?”

“I can’t believe I’m saying this,” she eyes me carefully, “because it doesn’t matter why he said it. He did and it was inexcusable. But you know he only said that because he was jealous, right?”

“Jealous?” I laugh bitterly. “Cruz has no right to be jealous.Heletmego.”

“Doesn’t matter,” she says matter of fact. “Jealousy makes us say and do ugly things. It’s like the little boy picking on the girl at the playground. Except in your case, it was high school and apparently now. If he can’t have you, no one can.”

“I doubt that’s it,” I reply dryly. “It’s more along the lines of, let’s make her life miserable.”
