The guys were reluctant to move away from me. She finally put her hands on her hips. “Move away from my patient. NOW!”

I heard a snarl come from Carter’s mouth, but they reluctantly moved to my other side.

Greyson was still standing by the doorway...his gun drawn.

So, this was fun.

“Kennedy, my name is Dr. Freeman. I understand...you were recentlydetained.”

Detained. That was a much prettier way to say kidnapping.

“Yes, I was.”

She pulled a chair up to the side of the bed. “Can you walk me through what happened?” she asked. Her voice was very soothing, I would definitely give her an “A” for bedside manner.

“I was taken into a van and my hands and legs were tied. I moved around quite a bit in the van, sustained some bumps and bruises for sure on the drive. When we reached the building we were taken to, I was hit in the face. And then…” My words faded away as I tried to keep my composure. “They put something in the food they gave me. Something that made me pass out. I’m not sure what it was. I couldn’t taste it in the food.”

Dr. Freeman gestured to her assistant who hurried over with the huge bag that she’d come in with.

“I’m going to get some blood samples and have it sent to my lab for immediate review, okay?”

I nodded, grimacing as I held out my arm, and she got to work cleaning my skin.

“Just a small pinch,” she soothed as she slid the needle in and started collecting my blood. She filled one vial, and then another.

“I’m going to have you give me a urine sample as well,” Dr. Freeman said, pulling out a small plastic cup.

I moved to get out of the bed, and Carter lunged towards me. “Let me carry you!”

“I’m good,” I told him, pushing out of bed on the opposite side as him.

The guys were falling all over themselves to accompany me to the restroom, but I drew the line at letting them come in with me.

I almost laughed at their looks of dismay as I closed the door in their faces.

Almostbeing the operative word. I was still too tired from whatever drugs I’d been given to fully get one out.

I peed into the cup and then washed my hands, wincing when I saw my reflection in the mirror, noting how bad I looked. My hair looked like a bird had taken up permanent residence on my head, and my eyes were bloodshot with deep circles under them.

Not beautiful.

But alive.

I just needed to remember that.

I walked out, jumping when Jack popped in front of the door like a real life Jack-in-the-box.

My heart squeezed with how relieved he was at seeing me, like he’d been worried I’d disappear while I was in the bathroom.

He grabbed my hand and led me back towards the bed.

“Hand that to Alex,” Dr. Freeman said, gesturing to the pee cup in my hand. “She’ll take the vials to our lab and we should have results back within the hour.”

The scared girl—Alex—took the vials and bundled them in a plastic container before striding out of the room.

“I’ll accompany you,” Greyson said in a scary voice. Any remaining color drained out of the poor girl’s skin.

“Greyson, stop torturing my assistant. Let the poor girl work,” Dr. Freeman said, sounding amused and exasperated at the same time.
