“I’m stuck in traffic,” she admits on a whimper.

Fuck.

She shouldn’t be driving in that state, but I don’t dare say anything to her since she’s already so fragile.

“Okay, where are Jack and Caleb now?”

“Mass General,” she manages to say.

“Okay. I’m on my way. I’ll meet you there.”

“Okay,” she sobs before hanging up.

Shit!

Shit!

Shit!

I run like a madman as I call my driver to come pick me up ASAP. I call Rex after, explaining that it’s best to delay the sale since I won’t be there.

“Jesus,” Rex laments on the line. “Okay, I’ll talk to Preston. I know he’s anxious to make this deal, but I’m sure he’ll understand. Even if only to avoid the damaging optics of buying a club whose star players have just had a horrific accident. Do you know if they’re okay?”

“Honestly, I know as much as you do right now. But when I get to Mass General, I’ll let you know their status.”

“You do that, son. Let me talk to Preston, and then I’ll go and meet you there myself.”

“Are you sure?” I ask, knowing how much he hates that hospital since Martha passed away there.

“Got to be there for all my boys. Especially in their time of need.”

“Okay, see you soon.”

I then hang up the phone just in time for the town car to appear.

“Mass General!” I holler. “And fucking step on it!”

“Sorry, Mr. Nichols, but no can do. There’s been heavy traffic all morning in the hospital’s vicinity. Apparently, someone totaled a brand-new Aston Martin in the early hours after coming from a wedding.”

I punch my fist repeatedly on my forehead.

Fucking Donovan.

“Fine. Just hurry,” I tell the driver.

Unfortunately, hurrying to Mass General becomes impossible since Monday morning’s rush hour, paired with the gridlocked traffic caused by the accident, has us moving at a snail’s pace.

It takes me a full hour to get there, causing each passing second that I’m not by Piper’s side to feel like fucking eternity.

When I finally arrive, I rush to the reception desk and ask for information about Jack and Caleb. But, more importantly, I need to find Piper.

“Are you family?” the nurse asks, his eyes never leaving the computer screen in front of him.

“I’m their fucking GM! Of course, I’m family,” I roar, and taking a cue from Piper’s rule book, I roll my eyes at him.

“Trent!” I hear Wilder’s voice call me before the nurse has a chance to reply. “Over here!” He waves me over to a double door.

“You’ve been a great help,” I grumble to the male nurse before running towards Wilder.
