I’m going to marry her one day.

Maybe not now.

Maybe not even a year from now.

Or even five years.

But soon, she’ll be at a place where she won’t be afraid that something will yank me from her life and force me to disappear.

Because nothing could ever keep me from loving her.

I’d find a way to crawl out of my own grave to prove to her that not even death could keep us apart.

Soon, she’ll come to the same understanding as I have.

That our love transcends those limiting beliefs. That our love is eternal.

I just have to be patient.

And for her… I’ll wait.

Even if I have to wait the rest of my life, it will be worth it.

Because she is.

I get out of the shower and rinse myself with a towel, feeling refreshed after a good workout.

Usually, by this time, the club’s gym is filled to the brim with players, but since it was Wilder’s wedding last night, Coach Byrne and I decided they deserved a day off to decompress.

This season has been one shit show after another, and we all deserve to have a day to relax and celebrate the joy his wedding brought us all.

It was just bad luck that it fell on the same day as the club’s sale.

Or maybe it’s for the best that it is.

Laurie—as I’ve succumbed to calling him—really came through for Wilder when all that shit with Charlotte’s ex came down. He’s showing that he will bring more to the table than just his billions. He’s going to bring his loyalty to the club, too.

This arrangement hasn’t been easy, with plenty of ups and downs between him and his father. Still, in the end, Laurie bested his prejudiced father and put his own money into the venture. It’s a considerable risk, and I give him props for putting his money where his mouth is. And since I’m the club’s second-largest shareholder, I’ll do everything in my power to ensure this transaction goes smoothly.

As I finish buttoning up my shirt, my phone starts to ring, displaying Piper’s name on the screen.

“Good morning, kitten,” I greet with a smile. “I wasn’t expecting you to call me so early. Couldn’t get back to sleep without me?”

But instead of a witty comeback that I expect to hear from her, all I hear are sniffled sobs.

“Piper? What’s wrong?” I ask hurriedly, now on high alert.

“It’s… I… there… was… an accident,” she stammers between weeping.

“Are you hurt? Where are you? Piper, are you hurt?!” I ask frantically, already picking up my jacket and hurrying out of the locker room.

“I’m… fine.”

“Baby, I’m going to need a bit more than that. You’re fucking crying. Tell me what happened.”

“It’s… Jack and Caleb. They… were in a car crash. The hospital called me. Caleb put Jack and me down as his emergency contacts. But since Jack…” She breaks out crying even harder now.

“Where are you now?” I ask, running down the large corridor leading to the exit gate.
