“Is that good with everyone?” Fiona inquired.
She saw Chloe skeptically nod, and the other two cheered their approval.
Fiona grew excited as the anticipation from the others rubbed off. The moon was bright, but the road ahead was dark, looming with thick trees and tall mountains. The scenery was starting to make it feel more real. Fiona’s skin was covered in goosebumps.
It wasn’t that she was itching for some hot hunk to strip off her clothes. For her, it was more the journalistic intrigue that caused her excitement. This was an event that no human had ever witnessed. Now, she had the opportunity to get the inside scoop. Her exposé would make her famous. Maybe even win a Pulitzer.
“Are you seriously checking to see if your notepad is in your purse?” Alexis scoffed with a side glance as they approached a massive iron gate.
“Why not? This is a once-in-a-lifetime thing. At least I can gain some perspective while we’re here.” Fiona spotted the small green book before closing her purse again.
A man approached the car and leaned in. “Can I help you?”
The women were stunned into silence as he peered into the car. He eyed them suspiciously until Alexis remembered the key.
She snagged it out of the cup holder and held it up. Before she could say anything, the man opened the gate.
“Oof, that was close,” Chloe mumbled.
The women remained silent as they drove down a long, narrow road, darker and windier than the one they had just been on that led up the mountain.
“I didn’t think about how isolated this would be,” Lillian said hesitantly.
“What did you think? They’re humans who turn into animals,” Alexis pointed out.
Fiona pulled out her phone to research the address.
“And they definitely have the space for it. This article says the estate is over four hundred acres, and it’s owned by the Powers family.”
“Never heard of them,” Alexis remarked.
“They own a lot of property from the looks of it.”
“Probably for other shifters to rent. Maybe he’s the leader.”
Fiona couldn’t help but correct her. “He’s called anAlpha,and it would be hispack. Depending on the animal this Powers guy is. He’s not bad-looking, either.”
“Let me see!” The others crowded to the middle to see the picture.
“He is hot.”
“He’d do it for me,” Lillian said with a quick glance. “Wow.”
Fiona couldn’t help but think the same thing as she stared back at what could be the most gorgeous man she’d ever seen.
“You have arrived at your destination,” the GPS informed them.
“Holy shit,” Fiona breathed as Alexis slowly pulled up to the modern-day castle.
A valet waited to take the car. The women grabbed their recently purchased masks and helped one another tie them on before getting out of the car.
Alexis handed the SUV keys to the valet, who looked at the car doubtfully. Fiona had to admit that the old Lexus stood out against all of the brand-new sports cars. Thankfully, he said nothing and took it anyway.
At the entrance to the mansion, a strange-looking photo booth-like structure blocked the double doors.
“What is that?” Chloe asked. “It looks like one of those places where you get your picture taken in goofy poses.”
“I wouldn’t have thought shifters would be into something so … human,” Alexis said.
