“You’re not pouting, are you, Shortcake?”

“No, Papa. I would never.”

He fed her mashed potatoes next. Yummy.

But then came the green beans. She wrinkled her nose, but she obediently took a bite. Actually . . . that wasn’t so bad.

“Not as bad as you thought?”

“They taste nicer than when Mum used to cook them.”

“Sometimes you have to keep yourself open to things you don’t think you’ll like.”

“Can I ask questions?”

“Of course.”

“Do you ever speak to your mum anymore?” she asked before he fed her more steak.

Wasn’t he going to eat?

“No. We are completely estranged.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be.”

“What about your ex? Elizabeth? Do you know anything about her?”

“I know that she got engaged to another lawyer. The rumor is that he’s cold in the bedroom and out. And that he spends more time at the polo club than with her.”

“Probably to get away from her.”

More green beans. Then salad, which wasn’t her favorite, but she’d eat it.

Next, he held up the glass of water for her. She gulped some down. She hadn’t realized how thirsty she was.

He frowned. “You need to drink more water. I have to monitor that more closely.”

“Do you, um, do you ever like to, um, well . . . because you’re a doctor . . . do you like medical play?”

“I’ve never done any medical play, no.”

“Oh.”

“But I might be persuaded if that’s something you’re interested in. You will have to be a very obedient patient, though.”

“I will be. I will!”

“It could be very . . . invasive.”

Her breath quickened. “I sure hope so.”

To her shock, he threw back his head and laughed. She grinned, loving that she made him laugh like that.

“You, my precious girl, are a treasure.”
